What is 'Sweeping the dial' in Psychology?

Asked by TheWebofDreams (84points) May 19th, 2018

All I know is that it is a term used by people who regularly change their emotions (Anger, sadness, pity) in order to see which emotion the other person mostly responds to them and to see what makes them tick

But what is the actual term? And do you guys have any other examples?

I’ve never heard this term. Do you have a quote possibly for context?

I’ve never come across this term either but it sounds like a form of psychological manipulation.

Sounds pretty much like a narcissist. I have a close friend whose ex is both a cop and a narcissist. What an awful combination!

Never heard of it and I am a Psych Major.

I would guess that it means to cover all the basics, all possibilities.
