Do you bully yourself?

Asked by LadyMarissa (16089points) May 23rd, 2018

While I was at lunch today, they had a local Christian themed station playing. The girl in charge of the show was telling a story about a day when she was taking her 6 y/o son to school & she made a wrong turn. In her frustration, she muttered to herself “How stupid can you be?” Her son looked up & asked “Mommy, why you bullying yourself? You don’t let nobody else bully you.” I know I have called myself stupid more than once but am ready to claw anybody else eyes out for doing the same. When I spilled my soda tonight, I caught myself mid word “Dum—my—”. I’ve decided to STOP the bullying at home!!!

What you think??

That isn’t bullying. That is like saying I am raping myself when I masturbate.

Yes. Every mistake I make.

No but I really chastise myself when I screw up.

If you dwell on what you should have done you will be miserable. Learn, try to not repeat.

I consider it a form of introspective thought. Maybe mixed with frustration, and misdirected anger….

A bit, sometimes. I’d call it (one aspect of) shaming, after John Bradshaw’s books and talks on the subject. It’s one form (or part of) of an extremely common thing/pattern people do to themselves. We tend to learn it from our families and it gets passed from generation to generation until someone sorts it out. It’s really worth giving attention to, as the issues the shaming patterns end up creating tend to shape our lives (and our families and the people around us) for the worse, and are about wanting us to bring attention to them.

If I screw up then I beat myself up for a while then try to learn a lesson from it and move on.

I’ll tell myself affectionately, “Why to fo Dummy!”

“Dum—my—” because with my disability, cleaning up amy spill is a real challenge & I knows better than to create that type of mess!!!

If I do something stupid it is something stupid and I feel annoyed with myself. It means it is less likely to happen again.

I once gave myself an atomic wedgie, because I watched 24 straight hours of the Big Bong Theery, while I was at a Star Trek convention! ;-o

Nah, we all make mistakes. I made a mistake once.

My Dad always said he was wrong once in his life. That was when he thought he was wrong but discovered he was right.
