Do you or your SO own a tuxedo?

Asked by LostInParadise (31914points) November 23rd, 2018

I was just at the wedding of a relative. The invitation specified black tie. My brother explained to me that this means tuxedo, if possible, or a dark suit. He has a tuxedo and has been to a number of black tie weddings. This was my first. I have never worn a tuxedo and I have not worn a suit in ages. I was lucky to find one in the closet that still fits. At the wedding, quite a few of the men wore tuxedos.

I heard on the radio that the trend is toward more casual weddings. Do you own a tuxedo? How often do you get to wear it?

Nope. I’ve only worn a tuxedo twice in my life. My wedding and a friend’s wedding where I was the best man.

If I ever needed a tuxedo again, I would rent one.

No.
I do have animal pyjamas instead.

Yes, my husband has his own set. His father and both his brothers also do.

Yes. I have two. A bespoke tux made years ago while I was overseas and a newer one purchased off the rack. I’ve outgrown the bespoke one. Maybe it will fit again if I get a wasting disease of some kind. :-)

I do like the look. I get a chance to wear a tux fewer than once every 3 years.

Nope. I don’t own one. I have not worn one in over 25 years.

I was tempted to buy one when I was in my twenties, with the expectation that I would be attending events where it is de rigeur. Some of my friends bought their own. It makes sense if one is attending the opera, symphony, and ballet openings every year, and if one goes to occasional benefit events.

Herb Caen, the late columnist in the SF Chronicle, used to write about the society old guard who could be spotted by how worn their tuxedos were.

The biggest reason I did not get one when I was young is that most brides don’t want you to wear a tux to a wedding unless you are family or part of the Bridal party, and then they want to be dictating the style of tux so everyone matches.

Two but haven’t worn one since 2011 to a Christmas Gala (dinner and dance) with a green & red plaid tie and cummerbund.

Two, I wear them once or twice a year. In the market for a vest to wear with them now, and probably an ascot instead of the bow tie.

Neither of us does. Dad owned one, which he wore when he and Mom went dancing about once a month. The tux is now owned by a nephew, Dad’s grandson, who has worn it on a couple of occasions.

I own one, yes. I’ve been to a number of weddings recently and needed one for those. For a while I was sharing a tux with my brother since we’re twins and wear the same size clothes. But when we both intended to wear one to a wedding, it was time I got one of my own.

I’ve never owned one and I have only worn one once when I rented.

I have two. A service “Mess Dress” and a civilian tux.
Don’t wear either that often.
Wore one to an event in San Diego two years ago.
Wore the other to a wedding last summer.
I had knee surgery and haven’t worked out in a month.
Not sure either would fit right now.

I own a tuxedo. I haven’t worn it for ten years. I bought it when I was moving in circles where it was cost effective to buy instead of rent.

The fabric and cut are beautiful. It’s a medium-priced model. I don’t see a day when I’ll wear it again. Even burying me in it would seem silly.

My husband doesn’t own one, but he has a black suit and a very dark navy suit that can suffice. I always tell men to own at least one black suit. You can wear it for black tie, interviews, funerals, you can always brighten it up with the shirt and tie if you want. Calvin Klein used to sell separates for a very reasonable price. Buy one jacket and two pairs of slacks.

Enough with the fashion advice though.

My husband has rented a tuxedo at times also. Generally, we don’t like having to spend money on an outfit to attend an event, but sometimes it seems necessary.
