Do Q tips packages have "do not use to clean ear" label?

Asked by flo (13313points) February 19th, 2019

What is the general term by the way?
https://tinyurl.com/y3ehl5cp (why should you not use q tips in your ears)

I’m asking about all the other brands as well, I just don’t know the gereral term.

See link and picture link

Yes, it’s on the package.

@elbanditoroso Thanks.
So, is it still not being used for ear cleaning by the majority of the population? Why is it (not to be used for ears) not well known enough?

Well, because most people don’t read directions. That’s the main answer. My mother cleaned my ears with q-tips 60 years ago – that’s where I learned it. Never questioned it.

Here’s the thing – the q-tip is just the right size to fit into your ear. It’s obviously a perfect tool for the size. What else are you going to use?

I always figured that the “Don’t put this in your ear” warning was placed there so that Unilever wouldn’t get sued when people poke their ear drums. Sort of like a defensive “we warned you” defense.

I am willing to bet that 90 percent of the people who buy these, buy them specifically to stick them in their ears.

@elbanditoroso Instructions on shampoos for example step 1 ) “wet hair” in general can be funny, since it should be obvious, I guess? But the q tips thing, I don’t think it’s obvious that we can push in the wax in and then, that it wouldn’t just be pushed out by the earwax formed later on. It can be used I guess as long as you wrap it with a long thin piece of material.
@ragingloli I would say even more than 90% I’m willing to bet.

Dr. Oz said in one of his shows that q-tips are used for removing make up. Every two days I use q-tips in my ear. I have only been sent to the hospital once from using them.

flo's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 What happened exactly that led you to the hospital?

@flo I compacted the wax in my ears , with a q-tip, and a sqeeze ball full of water. After a five hour emergency room stay at 1am to 6am the doctor flushed my ears in two minutes with a syringe and I was fine. I am addicted to the eargasm from the q-tips. They come with a warning not to use in the ear canal.

Ok, I thought maybe the cotton part got stuck in there, whether that’s an emergency or not.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@flo no never had a cotton break off in my ear. My q-tip box comes with a warning not to use in the ear canal. My hearing was temporarily diminished because of the plugged wax. Was scary… I thought that I really did it this time.

@RedDeerGuy1 I just happen to come back to this thread and found you’v added to your last post

…It may be better to do another post that starts with ”....Editing to add: ” instead of editing a post . I guess since there is no Activity For You notification for edited posts.

I think it’s more a liability thing. Not necessarily indicative of how people use them.

Yeah it is, but I think it’s one of the most common things they are used for sadly, I try not to though.
