Are holistic dentists quacks or ahead of their time? I found one.

Asked by Aster (20023points) March 30th, 2019

I am so tired of pushy, chilly, money grubbing molar jockeys and found a holistic dentist two miles up the street! I’m pretty excited. He’s pretty young, though and I think LDS. He has five little kids. Do you think he’ll be a quack or really trustworthy?

What does a holistic dentist do for your teeth? In other words, I don’t understand the term although Ido know what holistic medicine is.

When I am in pain I am grateful to have anyone fix my teeth.

Well, first I don’t get toothaches. I don’t appreciate dentists telling me which tooth hurts with this Know it All attitude when they’re completely wrong. Secondly, an holistic dentist believes that certain diseases can affect the teeth and maybe vice versa. So they will put little machine thingies on your leg or head or whatever bothers you while telling you that those are the causes of your teeth falling apart.

@Aster But what do they then do to fix your teeth that are falling apart?

Aster's avatar

They put veneers or crowns on them!

Ok. Doesn’t sound that different from my dentist to me. If you like this guy, why not give him a try?

LDS? He’s a Mormon? Does that matter to you?

Sounds like quackery to me. As pretty much anything “holistic” is. And it’s naive to think these folks aren’t just as profit-driven. They’re the same as the snake oil salesmen of yesteryear. Only they’ve moved on from selling alcohol and opium concoctions of “miracle tonics” to other, sometimes slightly more sophisticated, scams.

“Holistic” while innocent in itself meaning “looking at the big picture” seems to be a direct road to bring quackery into real medicine, like chiropractic and homeopathic potions. I think a responsible doc will be “holistic” in approach regardless of carrying the title or not just by taking things like diet, lifestyle and other medical conditions into account when providing treatment. I would view any doc who advertises as “holistic” as being more likely to push bullshit like acupuncture and then charge a fortune for it.
