What is a major-league gamer and does anyone make a living at it ?

Asked by srmorgan (6773points) August 29th, 2008

My son says that there are “major-league” gamers who somehow create a livelihood by playing in tournaments and winning money. I am trying to dissuade my son from this career choice. Any comments or advice?

Some tournments can pay up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, just for playing a video game. I don’t think it would be easy to make a lively hood out of it though.

if anything it’s more of a second job I’m sure…

There are a few people like this guy named Fatal1ty who make a crap load of money playing video games. He even has endorsements and everything.

There’s also some worldwide gaming league that has teams all over the world that play for a “World Cup” of games.
