What would be regarded as obscene consumption at Christmas?

Asked by josie (30934points) December 17th, 2019

On a recent thread, somebody made a criticism of Christmas, in that it ”...celebrates and encourages obscene consumption ”

What is that point where perfectly OK Christmas consumption becomes obscene Christmas consumption? Might be good to know before I shop.

I grew up with no Christmas and no expectations.

It was a humble life in rough economic times.

I was lucky I suppose in getting a present twice in my childhood, of which were useless to me as I never “played” with toys before…used to outdoors as my playground.

Contrast that with my late in laws who made it a custom of giving and obtaining numerous gifts from ALL relatives for my three children..hence they had about ten gifts each ( small to big gifts) which only taught them to expect “more” ( materialism).

I believe that one thoughtful,useful,practical gift for each child is all that is needed.

Or one gift from each parent and give relief to relatives pocketbooks and end this excess and greed that still continues.
A gift is just that a ‘Gift” from someone and not an obligation on others to perform or outdo gift giving.

@ragingloli

What if it’s a fruitcake? From last year?

ragingloli's avatar

Only if it is pre-digested and recycled.

I bet I could arrange that.

If you can’t see the tree until the 26th of December.

I agree with @raum. If you can’t pay your bills but you’re getting people big, expensive presents, then that’s obscene.

Giving the housestaff a Xmas bonus in their pay…not happening!
