Is Covid 19 turning out to be a predominately 1st world pandemic?

When you look at the number of cases in Africa and Latin America compared with Europe and the US it appears to be hitting the wealthier countries much harder.

No. Africa will get it now or not then soon. Africa is going to need the $800 million that Trump pulled out of the WHO

Maybe the people in other countries don’t travel as much? May be a part of it.

I would think that there would be very little testing going on in poorer countries.

No. Typical disease pattern is Asia to Europe to North America to South America. Travel is a huge factor in this, and travel has been very limited now, so that is helping. I’m sure all those Latin Americans who spend time in Florida in the winter helped bring C19 back to their countries, just like they do flu every year.

When African countries start increasing it will be just as bad there. Hopefully, they are doing things early and it never gets very bad, but that’s unlikely.

Edit: I just saw @ragingloli’s answer, and I completely agree with that too. That will be part of the seemingly low numbers.

My guess is that African and Asian countries are not accurately reporting the number of cases.

@elbanditoroso But the USA is also not accurately reporting the numbers due to the paucity of testing.

Seems that way. I would assume that people in poorer countries travel less, making it less likely they will bring home a foreign disease. Additionally, I continue to hear that the disease is killed by warmth and humidity, both of which are in abundance in Africa and Latin America. But otherwise it’s a bit early to say.

Parts of Africa are dealing with Ebola once again. Plus I doubt that they are testing anyone to see if they have it. If you die, you die and the government doesn’t care

In many African and Asian countries, they shop every single day. It is very much a part of their culture and mindset, so much so that they are simply not set up to think about shopping for a whole week, let alone for a month, nor do they think about cold food storage like we do in the US.

In Africa they may not have Covid very bad, but my daughter tells me they are far more in danger of starving, and many of them, who were doing quite well for themselves previously, already are.

From @Caravanfan’s article:

“Facing default, the government has unveiled an ambitious fund-raising plan that includes new taxes on individuals and companies and a 50 percent salary cut for top government officials.”

Isn’t it interesting how Ecuador is coping, compared to how Pelosi and others in the US are coping!

@snowberry ”...and others…” You mean like Trump?

I’ve read that there’s little testing within undeveloped countries, and that the available data aren’t readily disseminated.

Most 3rd world countries don’t have heavily populated cities. Most of their people are self-isolated by real life. They aren’t piled on top of each other and they don’t have the financial ability to visit other countries and other countries don’t typically visit them

@SEKA “Most 3rd world countries don’t have heavily populated cities”
What are you talking about? 3rd world countries have extremely densely populated cities.

Delhi, India population 25 million

Mumbai, India 20 million

Mexico City 20 million

São Paulo 20 million

More or less those are the numbers I know off the top of my head. Plenty more developing countries have cities over 10 million.
