Do you think Kent State would happen today?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46813points) June 7th, 2020

For those that don’t know, in May of 1970 unarmed college students gathered to protest the Vietnam war. ”the protest on May 4th, during which activists spoke out against the presence of the National Guard on campus as well as the Vietnam War, was initially peaceful.” But the police were called in and all hell broke loose. 4 students were shot dead.
I don’t know if any of the officers were charged with any crime.
When I hear people say we have fewer and fewer rights today, I think about Kent State…and I disagree.
Furthermore, the majority of the country agreed with the cops stepping in. Old school thinking was you just didn’t defy authority, ever. And that’s exactly what the hippies were doing.

Absolutely, and without question.

Easily. I wrote about this on Fluther about three weeks ago, before Minnesota.

Now, I think that in many – not all – states, it could happen in an instant.

Massachusetts brought in the National Guard last week. My nephew’s unit was deployed. They were given a 10-minute talk on what to do, were given guns with live ammunition, and were sent into areas of Boston and Brocton in groups of 5 or 6. These are kids with literally no experience doing anything of this sort. So, even if you believe it’s important for the government to crush dissent, this situation was perfect for someone getting killed.

I like to think we’ve learned our lesson from that and the example of Tiananmen Square.

Yes, Trump called up National Guard in DC from all over the country. Also pulled in 82nd Airborne Rangers, Military Police Platoon.

It will be a accident and Trump will reply, “It was the dead person’s fault.” He doesn’t know how to reduce conflict only pour gas on the fire.

I think it extremely unlikely. And by unlikely I don’t mean it is unlikely that a military unit in the same situation would not open up on a crowd. I think it unlikely that a governor would confront a college uprising with a similarly armed contingent of troops.

But the kids weren’t armed.

Yes I do. Everything is out of hand.

Honestly, I wouldn’t rule anything out.

Yes, that crossed my mind.

It could easily happen today, more easily.

Most young people I know (students at the college level) have no idea of what rights they have under the constitution and many would fight AGAINST those rights.
