Where are all the people threatening to leave the country if Trump wins?

Asked by Aster (20023points) November 3rd, 2020

If I had to guess I’d say they didn’t want to end up like they did in 2016 when Trump was elected but no; they decided not to leave afterall. They ended up looking like the Boy who Cried Wolf.
Has anyone famous made that , “I’m leaving if ” announcement this time around?

They are waiting to see if he loses.

Aster's avatar

@hmmmmmm what do you mean?

Darth_Algar's avatar

Yeah, a lot of people said the same thing when Obama was elected. What’s your point?

Aster's avatar

I’m sorry, @Darth_Algar if I annoyed you. You seem a little edgy today.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@Aster

Not at all. I’m just asking if you have an actual point here.

Demosthenes's avatar

Yeah, I don’t know why people threaten to do that, it’s stupid and childish since most never had any intention of following through. Just admit the human tendency toward complacency and inertia overrides any desire to uproot your life over who’s in the Oval Office.

gondwanalon's avatar

Why would they make a fool of themselves twice? They only said that they’ll leave because they were sure Trump would lose in 2016. There is a very slight chance (but I doubt it) that Trump will win again.

Also. From what I’ve seen of the world there’s no country better to live in than the USA. No adequate places to run too.

canidmajor's avatar

I imagine, @Aster, that you are not much in touch with the people who would say that, as those are the people most concerned with trying to behave in fashion to avoid Covid. I’m pretty sure that the people you are spending your time with don’t believe that it’s a a concern, as I imagine they believe what your candidate is saying.

Aster's avatar

@gondwanalon thank you! But I believe Trump will win. Have you seen the turnout of his rallies? Imagine over twenty thousand fans yelling “we love you!” I believe this will continue.
Thanks again for the compliment on my country!

cookieman's avatar

I saw a sign at a shop once years ago that said “Unhappy customers rarely complain. They just don’t come back.”

I think if one was serious about becoming an ex-pat, you would just leave with little fanfare.

Those who go on about it just want attention.

Aster's avatar

@canidmajor on the contrary. The people I know are all concerned with huge gatherings and few wearing masks. I am, too and I would wear a mask if I were in a large crowd.

My brother and his wife left for England right before Labor Day. They’ll be back next year sometime, depending on the election.

A lot of people would opt to leave for a while but since the White House messed up the reaction to the pandemic, we can’t go anywhere because countries won’t let us in.

Rush Limbaugh swore up and down he would leave the country if Obama was re-elected, but he never did.

canidmajor's avatar

Nobody else wants us anyway at this point.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@Aster ” Have you seen the turnout of his rallies? Imagine over twenty thousand fans yelling “we love you!”

Means jack shit.

Aster's avatar

^^^^^^^^^^^ I guarantee if thousands were yelling “we love you!” to Joe Biden you’d think it meant something. I guess this is just your personality.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Nope. Doesn’t mean a thing. Just because someone attends a rally doesn’t mean they’re voting for that person. It’s a bit like judging the popularity of the NFL based off the Super Bowl, when half the people watching are watching for the half-time spectacle and the commercials.

Darth_Algar's avatar

And frankly, I’d be disturbed by groups of people saying “I love you” to anyone. That’s not support, that’s being part of a cult.

Aster's avatar

Disturbed? Oh, brother.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Yep. That’s the kinda shit that leads to people committing mass suicide at Dear Leader’s command.

Aster's avatar

Are you alright? Chill or something.

Darth_Algar's avatar

I’m perfectly fine. Why you insist on assuming otherwise, when I’ve given no indication of the sort, is beyond me. I suppose it may be because you have no rebuttal, and thus fall back on inane comments.

canidmajor's avatar

@Aster you seem to be disproportionately annoyed with @Darth_Algar for mildly disagreeing with you. Are you all right? People who want to leave are not making general announcements, and most of us have no place to emigrate to, as few countries trust Americans any more, thanks to the gross mishandling of the contagion by this administration.
But I’m sure you don’t take it that seriously, which is why you don’t really understand the difference.

Jeruba's avatar

I read yesterday that there’s been an “overwhelming” number of applications to immigrate, to Canada in particular, from Americans begging to escape from current conditions in the U.S.

Seems like a slightly defensive response to a simple question.

@cookieman @canidmajor: It reminds me of people announcing they’re going to leave sites (for example Fluther), or Facebook groups. It’s like, if you want to go, just go. This is not an airport. You don’t have to announce your departure.

cheebdragon's avatar

@jca2 Do you usually announce your flight in the airport?
I know what you meant, I just like the idea of someone standing in an airport and loudly announcing that they are getting on a flight to Ohio, haha. Realistically though, if you’re moving out of the country, there are probably several people that should be notified, usps at the very least, but I do agree that it’s dumb/awkward when someone announces they are leaving Fluther.

jca2's avatar

@cheebdragon: Haha! In the FB groups, people will often post that comment about it not being an airport, when someone says they’re going to leave the group. I don’t – I just leave. When I left Fluther a few years ago, I just left. There’s someone now who keeps going on about how he might leave. It’s like, leave already or shut yer yapper about it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Actually @Aster, there are people threatening to leave, but this time, it’s if Trump does NOT win. Lil Pump for one. 50 Cent did but retracted when Chelsea said she’d sleep with him again.
Ice Cube and Little Wayne are big Trump fans, as is Kanye and many others. They say it’s about the taxes.

Tommy Lee, Cher and others threatened to leave is he does win. Amy Schumer did too, then said it was in ‘jest’. Streisand, Raven-Symone, Samuel Jackson-all leaving.

And generally no one goes anywhere. I always find it amusing when people make big announcements like that, so I pay attention.

jca2's avatar

Rich people like Streisand probably have houses around the world so for them, “leaving” means just spending more time at one of their other houses.

kritiper's avatar

It’s funny that people would say that. (Where would they go??)

cheebdragon's avatar

@KNOWITALL I thought 50 cent was only leaving California?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@cheebdragon Nope, see below. He’s from the Lou, but lives in Connecticut.

After Joe Biden revealed his new proposed tax plan if he wins the election this November, 50 Cent announced that he would be endorsing Donald Trump. “WHAT THE FUCK! (VOTE ForTRUMP) IM OUT,” 50 wrote on Instagram. “FUCK NEW YORK The KNICKS never win anyway. don’t care Trump doesn’t like Black people 62 percent are you out of ya fucking mind.” Now he’s indicated that if Trump loses, he’s going to look for a new place to live.

Responding to MSNBC anchor Ari Melber, who posted a picture of when he met 50 , 50 wrote, “Explain 62 percent to me. I’m packing my bags everybody that has money is gonna move.” Trump, just like 50 Cent, has indicated that he would also leave the country if he lost the election.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@kritiper I’m not rich, so I have no idea where the best tax refuge’s are.

More power to them, happiness is important and it’s been pretty miserable here for a few years.

si3tech's avatar

Excellent question! Where are tey when it’s all said and done? Most remain where they started. Some are such idiots I wish they would leave.

Zaku's avatar

I think I said that about George H W Bush, then Reagan’s Vice President. Unfortunately, I didn’t really have the will or means to easily do that, so sadly I’ve been here for the rest of the parade of ever-worsening and more-idiotic-than-I-ever-feared-possible US politics since then.

MrGrimm888's avatar

If I decided to leave the US, it wouldn’t be because of Trump.

It would be because of the fact that “my fellow Americans” have become a disgusting disgrace .

I’ve been seriously thinking about New Zealand.

However. I have to add.
This was a quote, from a friend of mine, from Saint Thomas.

She says “the grass is always greener, because it is fed by bullshit.”

Having traveled around the world, I find wisdom, in her opinion.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

Don’t know, but that’s preferable to all the dummies threatening civil war if Biden wins. This country is a representative democracy, not a banana republic.

kritiper's avatar

@KNOWITALL The OP didn’t specify that the question was only about the rich. I thought it meant “people in general.”

KNOWITALL's avatar

@kritiper I was actually responding to you and @cheebdragon regarding ‘where would they go?” as opposed to the OP.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Honestly, if I had the means I’d relocate to the United Kingdom, at least for a few years. But that has nothing to do with politics and I’d do it regardless of who’s in office.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Darth_Algar I would consider Belize, if I were leaving America.
