Have you ever had a benign brain tumor?

Asked by anniereborn (15511points) December 21st, 2021

Or someone you are very close to? My sister was just diagnosed. She had an MRI yesterday and sees a neurologist tomorrow. I have researched a lot. I know we will know answers in time. I’m just wondering what process she may have to go through.

Yes, but it was active. I instantly became a caregiver. It changed my life too.
Find the best care you can.
MD Anderson in Houston and Dana Farber in Boston are two of the top facilities in the States.
Trust in the Diagnosing Doctors and any Oncologists if needed is key.

There is a lot to go through emotionally. Research as much as possible, but I don’t suggest looking at mortality even if it is not benign.

Best of luck. Sending prayers

My mother did, eleven years ago. She went for an MRI when she started having small seizures, and had it removed soon after. It was a benign meningeal tumor, and it was about a 9 hour surgery. There was about a month in a rehab center before she could go home, and she was fine. Still is. She was 86 when this happened and is 97 now.

We saw no discernible change in behavior or competence.

If my 86 year old mom can waltz through brain surgery, so can your sister! <<<hugs>>>

A friend did. She had surgery to remove it and was fine. It was years ago. Scary but successful. A funny thing is that the pain meds afterwards made her really happy and loopy for a while.

No, @anniereborn, I haven’t had the experience. But, if the Fluther mods will permit me to wander in a General thread, I want to say that your question gave me chills. You don’t need any more trauma or sadness in your life, especially during the holidays.

@Forever_Free Thank you for those suggestions. She is already planning on getting a second opinion no matter what.
@canidmajor Wow! Your mom was one tough cookie. I’m glad she made it through that. I’m sorry she’s gone now.
@janbb HA! Well I hope she gets some good meds like that.
@Love_my_doggie Thank you for saying that. And I sure do agree. This is really really tough.

No, @anniereborn, she’s still with us! I just don’t talk to her anymore, and I’m pretty sure she’ll outlive us all! :-)

@canidmajor I’m so sorry I mixed that up! My brain is not working these days.

My former dentist’s wife had a benign brain tumor, and it was putting pressure on the nerves in her eye so she couldn’t close her eyes. She had to get surgery for that, plus surgery to remove the tumor. She lived and recovered but it was a rough year or two.

@anniereborn, please let us know how she does with all this!

Good news! It’s not cancerous!
Also good news it’s actually in the dura mater which is outside of the brain itself.
So IF she had to have surgery it would be “relatively” simple and shouldn’t affect her much.
For now she is just to come back in six months for another MRI.
Thank you all for any prayers or good thoughts you sent out!

I’m grinning from ear to ear, @anniereborn. I am so happy for you and your family. How lovely to get that relief before the holidays, rather than having to wait and worry!

@anniereborn What a relief! I am so glad to hear this.

@anniereborn That’s just wonderful! I’m pretty sure one of my neighbors had something like that and never had to have surgery – just regular checks. Thank goodness!
