Does this sound logical to you?

Someone told me, or I read it that you can plant grass seed in any month that has a R in I it. Does that sound right to you?

Depends on the grass, in the South Centipede and Bermuda grass can only be planted when the ground temperature reaches 55* F at night or average of 80* f during the day, Rye, Kentucky Blue grass and Fescues are planted during the months with “R” sound right to me.

So should I plant my fescue in September and give it all the following R months to grow big and strong?

Hmmm… Someone needs to ease up on the crack pipe. Or it could be true, but I’ve never heard that.

Speaking for the northern US, grass grows in the spring and again in the fall. I took an agriculture extension class when I had a lawn in eastern Michigan. The main points I took away were:

—Plant grass in April after the last frost or in September
—Don’t worry about brown grass in the summer – your lawn doesn’t require golf-course levels of watering – it can go dormant and will get green and lush again in the fall

I would check your nearest extension for info specific to your area, but for starters here are a couple of articles from Michigan State.

Tips for seeding lawns in September – September is the ideal time for seeding turfgrass in Michigan

Summer Lawn Care

This is what Pennington recommends. When I was planting my Zoysia, it was recommended to plant in the Spring. According to Pennington, fescue does better when planted in late summer/early fall. When in doubt, I suggest calling a local nursery who is more familiar with your area!!!

I think I used to throw my fescue seed out on the lawn in early spring. You can probably do it fall also, but with leaves falling on it I probably thought that didn’t make sense for my lawn.

I’d research it online for your area or ask wear you buy grass seed.

The dictum is “don’t eat shellfish (especially oysters) in months without an R.”

If you follow that for planting grass, you would be planting in the winter, not the spring.

That rule only works in Floridar or Californiar.

Have only heard that “months with an r” thing in relation to oysters like @zenvelo mentioned. Have never heard in relation to seeding turf.

Though it does kind of make sense. Since May-August are the hottest months. The heat would probably fry your lawn before it fully germinates.

That works in this area Western NY as well. If done in September the sun is not so strong and the ground is moist in the morning. The seeds might sprout and establish before winter. Same for early October. In the Winter the ground goes through a process of Freeze -thaw and the seeds fall deeper into the cracks so they are ready when the ground thaws in late April.
May through August are usually dry and the sun is too hot for good germination and we have lots of birds around to eat your seeds.
Thanks for the reminder. I’ll toss out some seed when there’s a few days of rain in the forecast.

Yes, you are not supposed to plant grass in the summer but in the Spring or even better in the Fall. Not so sure about the winter “R” months though.

I’m pretty sure that you may plant grass seed during any month of the year if that pleases you. One old guy around here in the PNW claims that he spreads grass see over the surface of the snow in his yard. That’s supposed to help with the germination (seed “stratification”) when the snow melts.

I’ve found that it is better to plant grass seed at the end of September, or early October. The grass has a good chance to get started and will take off in the spring really well before the summer gets hot. Keep it watered!

@zenvelo the months of March and April are in the spring.
