In what ways can you imagine AI tech might help in caregiving for seniors at home?

Asked by mazingerz88 (28821points) November 1st, 2023 from iPhone

I can imagine an AI equipped camera system telling the caregiver who is cooking at the kitchen if the senior who has dementia is doing something he or she is not supposed to.

The AI is supposed to tell the difference between which action is safe and which one is not.

The caregiver could have a screen monitor in the kitchen so he could see what’s happening in the bedroom but in the course of doing chores around the house, having your eyes glued to that screen isn’t feasible.

A T100 would have no moral qualms about smothering grandma with a pillow, when the command comes through.

We are honestly only like five to ten years out from having full blown Star Wars type robots walking around doing stuff for us.

Helping after a fall.
Voice command to call emergency.
Medication, appointment and meal reminders.
Perhaps prepare meals or cleaning.

I’m hoping then when I say, “Fred, what word am I trying to think of?,” Fred will be able to answer me!

Robots? Ahhh, no! Humans need other humans. People with beating hearts and all that. But Japan has other ideas.

Maybe someone to talk to.

I imagine it might be something like this only even more tolerant of errors:
Amazon Silver
Of course this is a Saturday Night Live spoof but it will not be far off.

@LuckyGuy I remember that from when it was going around. Hilarious! I might buy one but I don’t know about that.

By providing a voice that endlessly repeats what those with dementia struggle to remember; where they are, what time it is, the names of family members, the year and the month and who is making lunch. Things like that tailored to the individual and giving reassurance. An advanced AI could read the clients moods and respond accordingly for maximum benefit.

They’re just playing…

@flutherother I like the idea of reminding people of families and relationships. It could be like an electronic picture frame that changes every so often and states the name of everyone in the picture.

I don’t know if this is AI, but they tested a system where I live that monitors movement in the house with sensors in every room. If someone stopped moving long enough the designated family member or friend was contacted.

Maybe an easier way to reorder groceries as they are used.

I think of robots as a separate thing, but I think a Rosie (Jetson’s) robot housekeeper would be awesome! Not only for seniors, for everyone.
