What do you think about the Abraham Accords?

Asked by JLeslie (65425points) 3 months ago

I was trying to read up on it, but I am terrible at reading about that sort of thing written in a history lesson type format. Curious about the collective’s opinion. Does Trump get some credit for some good on this? Did the accords create any new problems or exacerbate any of the old ones?

Was the Middle East already primed to start making some deals even before the formalization of the Abraham Accords?

What do you think about calling them Normalization Agreements rather than Abraham Accords? Is it all part of the same thing?

I haven’t read very much about them.

I doubt Trump (can read much at all, and that he read much of, or) actually had much to do with the success of anything worthwhile about a peace treaty. He’s clearly too idiotic and almost useless at diplomacy unless it involves selling out US interests or information.

Looks like the Trump White House hosted the negotiations, with Trump as “witness” (LOL) and (the corrupt and inappropriate) Jared Kushner and Kushner’s assistant Avi Berkowitz facilitating the negotiations in some capacity.

I’d say that Trump & co can be credited with hosting and not doing anything that made those accords impossible.

Too early to say. When all was stable in the middle east, the AA was a good start and approach. Now that the area has become unstable and war-filled, the question is: Can the Abraham Accord survive?

Some of the Arab states find it worthwhile. Even Saudi Arabia is maybe going to join, which would be a serious stem.

But – Qatar is becoming a real stab-you-in-the-back state, and not helpful in regional stability. And they are a supporter – big time – of Hamas.

So, it’s an idea with great potential, but it’s too early to say what will happen when this latest war ends.

@elbanditoroso I actually wanted to read up on Qatar. I didn’t realize they “harbor” Hamas leaders until these recent events. Not sure the term harbor is correct.

I’m going to a lecture in February about the Israel Palestinian situation and the speaker knows the entire ME and the politics very well. Should be interesting. I’ve mentioned him before, he used to teach at West Point and lived in the ME. He also used to advise re war crimes. He was a JAG lawyer as part of his career. In my experience with him he’s quite objective.

The Abraham Accords was an effort to normalize relations between Israel and Arab nations. It was trying to get Arab nations to recognize Israel’s sovereignty and to start setting up diplomatic relations with Israel. It was even looking at figuring out the Israel/Palestine issues that have been going on.

Yes, Trump gets credit for these. He was a moving force in starting them, in setting the goals, in brokering the deals, in making motions to get Arab nations to buy into them. It was a step towards peace in the region, though I honestly don’t see that as a possibility.

Since Trump left office, obviously Biden didn’t want to do anything Trump suggested so he stopped working on the AAs.

@seawulf575 I don’t know if Biden stopped working on the Abraham Accords, I read he renamed it as I said in the OP.

Saudi and Israel were close to an agreement when Hamas attacked. I don’t know if Biden or his administration anyway was still involved, I would guess they (we) were.

@JLeslie The best I can tell, “Normalization Agreements” are the same as the Abraham Accords. The Israeli-UAE Normalization Agreement and the Israeli-Morocco Normalization Agreements are all part of the Abraham Accords. There is talk of an Israeli-Saudi Arabia Normalization Agreement, but I haven’t seen much about it. And I seriously doubt Biden is even a part of it. I saw an article that showed that Netanyahu and the Saudi Crown Prince had been meeting to start working through some of the details. It didn’t sound like it was set in stone, but they were at least starting the talks.

I say that I seriously doubt that Biden had anything to do with it because I don’t think he has the cognitive ability to deal with these things AND if he had been working on it, you’d have heard about it 24/7 in an effort to show that Biden has done anything as POTUS that might be construed as beneficial for the country.
