How much t.v. do you watch?

Asked by elchoopanebre (3079points) November 7th, 2008

About half a year ago I unplugged my t.v. and stored it in the attic. I haven’t looked back since.

I was somewhat addicted to t.v. and wanted to spend my time doing more productive things (granted that internet usage has basically replaced my t.v. viewing). It took me a few weeks to not miss t.v. a single bit.

How much do you watch? If you have to go without it do you experience ‘withdrawal symptoms’?

Random side note: if there’s ever a big game on I’ll go to my friend’s house and watch it on his 50’’ flatscreen. So I guess I watch about 3 or four hours every couple weeks for a game or something of the sort.

I get hit with a double whammy. I’m hooked on Jewelry Television (the show) and then spend hours looking through reviews and products on the website counterpart. I do use coupons though: http://couponsjewelry.com

Between internet and TV about 10 hrs a day.

I try only to watch no more than an hour a day. TV is a programming tool that is why they are called programs. I had an audio visual class in which we were told to watch TV without the sound and write down what we saw. We all noticed a lot more violence and the degradation of women then we were aware of. For another project we were told to darken the picture and only listen to the sound. The tube became louder once there wasn’t anything to watch and no matter what show was on it sounded like Jaws or Jurassic Park. We were all very surprised.

Too much! I love the TIVO though. I actually watch a lot less because I tend to just watch my recorded favorites, Boston Legal, Stewart, Colbert, Food Network stuff, etc.. I have watched a lot of election programming lately, but it is turned to the satellite radio soul or blues stations as background now that it is over.
Gambit, that is interesting about your class exercise.

since the campaign started, 5–6 hours a day of news. One to two hours of sitcoms some days.
Husband into sports so we will be watching games now.

I would estimate that I watch television about 21 hours a week (3 hours a day) and sometimes a little more if you add in watching movies on t.v. (I have Netflix). I work a 12 hour shift at work and sleep during the day so that reduces television viewing time for me (which is probably a good thing because I hear that too much t.v. rots your brain). :o)

I just moved to NY and don’t have cable so when I turn on my TV I get nothing but scramble. I don’t miss it. I never really watched TV unless I was at my mother’s house.

The visit would go like this: I would decide to go visit mom. I would swear to myself that I would only visit for a few hours. I’d sit down in front of the TV and, like, 5 hours had passed! Then my mom is all asking me what I want for supper! You know why that’s bad? Because then mom wants you to do the dishes and you know what? Mom has this almost psycho way of how she wants her dishes washed and put away which brings up years of anxiety regarding the color coding and placement of TupperWare cups and bowls.

TV is bad. :(

Zero.
I watch news sometimes on cnn.com during the election, and they may continue for a while…
Other mthan that I watch old shows I loved from years ago, on my computer or dvd’s.

I used to watch LOADS of TV when I lived at home, basically because my small town offered no other alternative sources of entertainment, but since moving to boarding school, I’m so bogged down with work that I haven’t watched a single episode of anything since July. I honestly don’t miss a thing about it though…. I’ve Fluthered a lot more, which is definitely a positive improvement. :)

I take that back…. I did watch the presidential debates and wrote responses for extra credit, but that’s the absolute extent of it….

floorting and fluthering takes a good bit of my recreational time.

I watch about 1–2 hrs of tv approx. 4 times a year. (for the past 8 yrs.) Not often enough that I have ever learned how to use the remote control. No, I don’t miss it and have much more fun on the internet (maybe 2 hrs a day) and/or reading. Once in a while I rent a movie and use the vcr thing- is that what you call it? Anyway, the thing my boys gave me to play movies on.

Not counting Netflix movies, probably 8 hours a week. I only have 2 “can’t miss” shows: House and True Blood.

MacBean's avatar

Sunday – Brothers & Sisters
Monday – Chuck, Heroes
Tuesday – House, The Mentalist
Wednesday – Pushing Daisies, Criminal Minds, CSI: NY
Thursday – CSI, Eleventh Hour

I don’t watch anything on Fridays or Saturdays.

Still quite a lot, really, but this season I’ve given up Cold Case, Without a Trace, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Numb3rs, Ghost Whisperer, Supernanny, Wife Swap, Survivor, Desperate Housewives, Ghost Hunters, and I don’t think I’ll watch Lost when it starts up again.

I’m probably forgetting some that I’ve given up. That list is just off the top of my head. I had a major problem but I’m fixing it!

You can do it, MacBean! But holy hell is that a mountain to climb.

My hubby would say way to much. Actually I hardly watch any but when I do it’s reruns of Sex in the City, CSI Miami or New York and Grey’s Anatomy.

I don’t pay for cable TV, and I watch so little television nowadays. I love it. I grew up in a house where it was always on, and so much time was wasted watching dumb shows instead of living life. Watching others live instead of living ourselves. Ugh. What really gets me about this was a lot of the TV watching was mindless.

Nowadays I only watch new shows that gain a great reputation. Examples: Dexter, Heroes, House, Kenny versus Spenny. Since I was out of the TV loop for a few years, all of them are available on DVD. If I catch up to their current season, that’s what Bittorrent is for. Great shows I buy, good shows I watch or stop watching. I still spend lots of money on DVDs. I just buy them once I know I’m not wasting my money. The best part about this is TV is always on my schedule.
