General Question

Are there any handbrake gurus out there who can help me?

Asked by mamasu (1380points) November 29th, 2008

I download it onto my Mac with no apparent problems, but can’t get it to open? Any immediate thoughts about something I might be missing or any advice about how to convert DVD’s to play in iTunes or on my iPod? I’m still transitioning from PC to Mac, so I’m afraid I’m not very savvy. As far as I know I’m running OSX 10.5, but not really sure how to check. The Mac is barely a year old. I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Of course, once I get it to open, I’ll have to figure out how to make it work, but I’ll be happy to just get through the first step. Much appreciation for any advice.

Well if it won’t open I would suggest downloading it again. You my have just got a bad download. Of if this doesn’t work try find a previous versions list. (there’s usually one on an open source program website like handbrake) and download an older version.

First, I would redownload using this link to ensure that you have downloaded the correct file.
If it still doesn’t open, perhaps you could elaborate on what happens instead?

@lefteh, I downloaded again via your link. When I try to open it, the icon sort of bounces like it’s going to open, then stops. Nothing happens.

To find out what version of OS X you are using you can click on the apple in the upper left and select About This Mac.

For the handbrake problem I would suggest making sure that you dragged Handbrake to the Applications folder. Running it from the disk image(the .dmg file) could cause problems. It would be strange but it could happen.

The most likely problem is a corrupt preference file. If you can find a file called org.m0k.handbrake.plist delete it. It should be in Library/Preferences.

Also try repairing permissions on your system disk. (Utilities/disk utility/Repair permissions).

I dont have the same problem as you, but Handbrake is not working for me either. Everyone else is raving about how great Handbrake is and how easy it is. Well I’ve taken all the tutorials, and gotten tons of advice. Im more than 100% sure I am doing everything right, and my videos end up coming out blocky, and the sound is screwed up. As far as Im concerned Handbrake is a joke..

Strange. I’ve used Handbrake to rip transfer dozens of DVDs very successfully without doing anything but clicking Go.

@lefteh, wow very lucky, I cannot at all get it to work.

I wound up downloading a little earlier version and it works just fine. I’m still playing with it a little and learning, but so far, so good. It’s nice to not have to lug a bunch of DVDs and a laptop or DVD player with us on trips.

@mamasu, can you please send my a link to download the earlier version of handbrake?

@desiree I’m going to try to do this correctly. Just in case, it’s version 0.9.1 rather than 0.9.3
