How do you read ?

Asked by mea05key (1812points) December 9th, 2008

Do you read loudly whenever possible? Do you read to urself in your mind? or do u simply digest words without needing the sound of the words in your mind? I read to myself in my mind.

I am trying to learn whether is it possible to overcome that reading ‘sound’ in my mind. It probably wil help me digest information in a different way.

A little of both really. I never really payed attention, to tell you the truth. I find myself mostly “saying” it in my mind, but at other times I can find myself a page down without having thought anything.

I think I need the words in my mind otherwise I drift off suddenly and find myself somewhere amongst the washing up, emails and errands I have to run the next day…or alternatively….simply…asleep….because i am always too tired to read these days :(((

Very slowly..:-) It’s too distracting for me to read out loud either externally or internally…the only time I revert to those types of tricks is when I having a truly difficult time grasping what the author has wrote…

Don’t know what you call it, but after a few paragraphs, I am “there”, within the story. With a good book (and no interruptions), hours can pass until I “wake up” back to reality.

Not counting interruptions, what usually “wakes me” is a) stupid grammar errors, b) bad dialogue, or c) unbelievable plot twists.

Try rereading one of your favorite books. Since you already know the story, you can focus more on imagining the events, dialogue, etc. and less on the actual process of reading.

My ‘mind’s voice’ speaks what I’m looking at. When I read out loud I don’t know what’s going on because the sound of saying it distracts my mind from understanding. As I read, it’s as if I’m saying the words out loud, because I can hear air passing through my vocal chords like I want to say it out loud. I don’t mouth the words or anything though, I’m just breathing the same way I would if I were saying the words.

I read ‘out loud’ in my head. When I am distracted and don’t do that for some reason, I’ll have no idea what I’ve read.

I read out loud in my head. Now that I’m stopping to think of it, and re-reading the comments above, I can actually distinguish different voices for different people… well maybe not voices per se, but some semblance of unique personality for each person. If I’m deep into a book where the characters are well developed this personality is very strong.

I do not read “in voice”, not do I hear the sounds of the words (which is why my written vocabulary is much more extensive than my spoken vocabulary). An average paperback takes me 2–3 hours to read, depending on plot complexity.

A very small man pops up in my brain and narrates the stories to me :)
