Would you like New area on Fluther?

Asked by oasis (980points) January 4th, 2009

Would you like a new area on Fluther? Where the questions or comments cannot be pulled(within reason) by the mods.By enering the new page you agree to take responsibility for any offence caused to you personally, unless it’s blatant harrassment,in which case the Question is pulled.
Las night i was enjoying a Question i posted on Religion(an immotive subject at it’s mildest)it had more than 50 posts and made an hour spent on it fantastic.
Mild subjects like,What frock should i buy my daughters best friends sisters cousin?are really rather mundane.
However the real “GET YOUR TEETH INTO” suject matters are pulled as soon as they really warm up.I think it would enhance the site and more attractive to newcommers.
Any thoughts?

No. This site has guide lines and they are spelled out clearly. I don’t always agree with them either but I love that there are mods on here. Not just a site owner that decides what they like or dislike. It can seem biased sometimes but it pretty much is the best Q&A site out there.

No, trolls (and your question was) and flaming aren’t really welcoming to someone coming from google. There are plenty of barely moderated sites if you want to have those fights. I suggest reddit.

edit::Changed a lot..

I understand your regard to guide lines and the purpose of them, however the guide lines could still apply, just adjusted.

You have the choice not to enter.
You do NOT have to move out of your comfort zone.
I’m not suggesting you lose something that you have gained almost 12,000 points doing.
Just another page.
Do you fear change?

Just sounds like a bad idea.

jrpowell's avatar

Actually, if you had been here long enough you would see that I was a proponent of change. I bitched about having a place to complain about fluther. I wanted a Flutherchat page that would allow people to bitch.

I requested it here.

I just think that your idea is a bad one.

oasis's avatar

How can it be a bad idea if you have the choice to enter or not.

You like Espresso i like Cappuccino, some like both.

It’s a bad idea to Jump off the side of a mountain.

A free-for-all will certainly carry over to the main site. And as a result the discourse here will be lowered. I have seen it on other forums. When Macnn opened the political forum everything went to shit. The entire forum turned into fighting and most people left. There are plenty of other places that embrace fighting.

Understood.

I like fluther the way it is, leave it alone. If you don’t like it, you have the choice to just not come here…..

DITTO,it would also benefit from less foul language, considering that children use it!
Sorry maybe you are a child.

There have been some very in-depth, controversial and interesting discussions on Fluther. I’m not sure why you think the “best of Fluther” is being pulled, because it isn’t.

We’d rather not attract the bad apples at all, so making an section specifically to accommodate for them isn’t on the roadmap. Hope this helps.

A question i posted on religion got pulled last night,it went on for quite a while, the people involved were at both ends of the spectrum as regards belief.
To my mind it was a good healthy back and forth,it got pulled as unacceptable after more than an hour.
I quoted only truths.
Why is it not possible to have a heated discussion instead of just blowing wind up each others rears.
A different area would facilitate this.
Also to enter you will have to be a member of Fluther for six months or other criterior toget in.

No, no, no. I think JP is right, any animosity experienced in the separate area would bleed over and ruin the main site. There have been plenty of controversial and heated threads…they don’t all get pulled. If the mods pulled your question, there was probably a good reason for it.

@oasis If you’d like to talk about why that question was pulled, feel free to send me a private comment or email richard (at) fluther (dot) com.

Here is a controversial topic related to religious beliefs that caused heated debate. From what I saw, not a single post was moderated. In my experience the moderators only remove obvious flames or spam or blatant self-promotion. I agree 100% with those who believe Fluther is perfect the way it is.

Nice point.

I would like to publicly commend oasis for acknowledging what people have said about his suggestion instead of trying to obliterate them.

No. The very rules that the Fluther designers have incorporated is what makes this site unique.
