I am in France for now on a temporary student visa. Can I go to Scotland and re-enter the country?

Asked by swoopanddive (5points) January 27th, 2009

I am still waiting for my final “carte de séjour.” I booked a train to go to Scotland (a non-Shengen country) for the week-end, but someone said I wouldn’t be allowed to come back in if my papers arent’t finalized. Is that true? Which officials should I consult for the official answer?

What passport are you traveling on?

Mexican (good question!)

You need to go to the prefecture de police and ask for a “visa de retour”. That will be your assurance of getting back in. Knowing how the prefecture operates, I don’t know if 3 days will be enough lead time.

Here’s the official policy.
Good luck!

Its my understanding that France and the United Kingdom are part of the European Union, and that means that if you have access to 1 country, you can cross the boarder to the others un-hindered. Like my brother studied in italy this last summer, and he visited switzerland, germany and greece and didn’t need to do any special paper work. But, I could be wrong.

@LKidKyle1985 The agreement by which EU states allow free border crossings is called the Schengen Agreement, but Ireland and the UK never signed onto it.
