It is a long and involved process that requires great woodworking skill and a knowledge of the attributes of various types of wood if you are going to make an acoustic guitar. Here is some information about the types of woods used in making a guitar: http://www.jemsite.com/jem/wood.htm . The steps in actually building the guitar can be found here: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/hb_musical_instruments/article/0,2033,DIY_13881_2778043,00.html

It is a bit simpler to make an electric guitar in that the body is merely a holder for the strings and the pickups, but you still need to know a bit about what you are doing.

It’s even simpler to make a fake electric guitar to use with something like Guitar Hero. see http://www.instructables.com/id/Awesome_Wooden_Guitar_Project/

I would first call Les Paul (and without blushing I can say that I can do that) and ask him. From there,you are on you own.

@Martyn Welcome to the collective. You may find it helpful to take a look at the Fluther Guidelines. There is a section that provides tips on asking the best questions.

Ignore DrBill’s less than welcoming tone, but the idea of lurking for a while and spending some time looking around the site is a good one.

@DrBill Were you really so perfect as a newbie that you can throw boulders? Ease up a little.

@Martyn,
Sorry for the obtuse comments by Marina. I gave my comments to help you find the answer you were looking for, whereas Marina tends to attack unnecessarly.

You will soon learn whose comments to read and whose to ignore. Good luck with your project.

Martyn, basically ignore everybody’s answers and just go buy yourself a guitar. Making one is practically impossible. Or at least making one that plays. I’ve been playing the guitar for over 20 years and the most I’ve managed so far is to change the magnets. Even lowering the bridge is a nightmare, let alone making one from scratch!
