Can I say "Vector" as a shorter word for an Illustration?

Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) February 9th, 2009

I am reworking my portfolio site but the word “Illustrations” is a bit long for where I would like to place it. If I were to say “Vector” is that clear enough? I realize what both are and that not all Illustrations are Vector Images, but does that solve the problem or can you think of a better word?

How about images? Unless you really know Graphic Design buzz words “Vector” would be confusing.

That is true, well what I am trying to do is divide it up into sections like web, print, illustrations and so on….I mean I can just make the font smaller for illustrations and it doesn’t look terrible, just I figured a more uniform look would look a bit nicer. I’m not sure images really captures what will be on that page. I agree with you though, Vector could be confusing!

Personally, I would only use vector to describe an illustration if the illustration is indeed a vector graphic.

No. It’s misleading. The word vector is used to represent vector art only. Everyone would become confused if you use vector in place of illustration.

Stick with illustration. “Graphic art” may also work.

Look up illustration in a thesaurus and see if you find any other appealing word.

I say use Illustration.
Don’t sacrifice clarity, especially on a portfolio, for convenience.
If it doesn’t fit there, find a better place for all of the titles.

Illustration is really the word that you should use. Also, not everyone knows what a vector image is.

This is a case of the layout taking priority over the content; it’s extremely important to find a balance between the two.

Unless you can find a way to communicate the function of that menu item as clearly as labeling it “Illustrations”, you need to alter your layout.

To do otherwise would be at the expense of usability and clarity.

Good luck with your design; I hope you find a way to make it work!

I agree I didn’t really want to replace the word cause like you said it sacrifices clarity, I made the font smaller and I think it looks fine, maybe once I’m done ill post a picture in this question and see what you guys think.

there is a rough draft of the layout, no links work, and it still has a ways to go…but here is what I’ve come up with, thanks cornets 01. i used the word portraits

don’t mind the grammer of text to much that will be worked on more haha

@johnny0313x – the page looks nice, but I am glad you said the grammar will be worked on more. Your verb tenses are awkward.

haha yeah that was me typing at 2 am just mostly working on how I want the text to look and then I will go back and work on how the text will be worded ha thanks though :)

It does look good.
If “Portraits” gets too limiting, you could always switch it to “Artwork”
Given the context, I think it would make sense.

I agree fireside, I worried it might limit me some but in the future I will change it to artwork when that section expands, right now it is only people.
