How do you usually get a song that's stuck in your head out?

Asked by mangeons (12288points) March 3rd, 2009

I usually just end up getting an even more annoying song stuck in my head, so I obviously need a new strategy. I always have songs stuck in my head, it’s quite annoying.

find a better song.

try Pandora or Last.Fm

mangeons's avatar

Yeah, but then that song gets stuck in my head, that’s what I’m saying, even if it’s a good song, it’s still annoying to have it repeating over and over in your head. Especially if you only know a little bit of the song.

mangeons's avatar

Ouch. Did you really have to bring your painful technical terms into this, Gail? Lol, I’m just kidding. You know everyone loves your logic. :)

eponymoushipster's avatar

@mangeons true…but i usually have some song or bit of something kicking around in there.

A lot of people do.

gailcalled's avatar

@mangeons: Sorry, let’s eat instead .À table.

mangeons's avatar

Oui, mais table et penible. ((yawn))

onesecondregrets's avatar

I don’t. I just move on to the next one.

mangeons's avatar

Non? Marina pas comprende?

eponymoushipster's avatar

LouisianaGirl's avatar

When I fall asleep I forget all about the song when I wake up, try that or just find a new song.

gailcalled's avatar

@eponymoushipster: Пожалуйста.

@mangeons; What’s Marina got to do with anything?

Bri_L's avatar

Sing “Electric avenue” Everyone knows part of it and not the rest. By the time you realize you don’t you will have stopped singing the other song. Works every time.

Jamspoon's avatar

Mm, I consider this a “head f*ck,” and in these sorts of situations I find a bit of concerted non-thinking helps. ;)

@eponymoushipster Tebya guvoryesh pa ruski?

aprilsimnel's avatar

If I sing it out in my indoor voice, earworms go away!

eponymoushipster's avatar

Baloo72's avatar

The Final Countdown is now playing in your head.

that should do the trick

@eponymoushipster It’s been almost eight years since I’ve had to speak Russian, you’ll afford me that mistake I hope :D

Bri_L's avatar

@Baloo72 – Now I am picturing GOB from Arrested Development.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Jamspoon in soviet russia, mistake affords you!! yeah, it’s ok. this time.

Mr_M's avatar

I’ll play it on one of my keyboards.

eambos's avatar

I hate you, @Bri_L! I can’t get Electric Avenue out of my head!

And you two,@Baloo72. I have a medley of “The Final Countdown” and “Electric Avenue” playing in my head. It’s a horrible medley.

eponymoushipster's avatar

Personally, i always enjoyed putting “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” into the head of my coworkers.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@TitsMcGhee i’m glad you feel that way.

mangeons's avatar

Non, J’ai comprende pas.

gailcalled's avatar

NIchonsMcGhee says, among other things that when she speaks french, she is irresistable. Je la crois.

comprende is spanish = il comprend.

mangeons's avatar

Whoops. I’m not exactly… fluent yet.

gailcalled's avatar

Just learn the present tense of comprendre this week (before you tidy your loft, of course.)

Les étapes de bébé...

mangeons's avatar

Hah. I’m looking into getting a black futon when I re-do my room. I can sleep anywhere, including comfortably (I just know I butchered that word) on the floor. I have French class every other day, including tomorrow, but I’m only in French I. :)

aprilsimnel's avatar

@gailcalled – Amours pour “nichons”!

gailcalled's avatar

@mangeons: Pretend that your French class is something that you can’t get out of your head. I still remember my first day of French I and what I learned.

mangeons's avatar

One thing I remember:

J’ai un rondezvous avec David dans vingt minute (sp?).

Except you have to say it reallyfast. She taught us that. It’s like:

J’aiunrondezvousavecDaviddansvingtminute! :)

gailcalled's avatar

Parfait, sauf rendez-vous et vingt minutes. Une minute…deux minutes.

Have you gotten that song out of your head yet?

mangeons's avatar

I actually have the “Sugar Cubes” commercial song stuck in my head right now. If you’ve ever seen that commercial, it is so annoying!

And the funny part is, we actually have someone named David in our class, so I’m always teasing him saying, “Don’t be late for our date in 20 minutes!” He’s cool though, he’s a 7th grader.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

gailcalled's avatar

Hit option (alt) e and get this…´...then hit e again and get this: é. I am using Mac OS 10.5.6.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

Oh la la, c’est trés difficile! Merci, ma belle.

gailcalled's avatar

@nichons; I just sent you an email with all the rest, should you want to write in Spanish, and German. You’re on your own with the Scandinavian languages. G

wilhel1812's avatar

I go listen to the song, all the way through and then i listen to the rest of the album and then i listen to another album.

mangeons's avatar

There’s also a character Map under Programs>Accesories>System Tools with a bunch of different symbols for different typefaces on Windows. :)

eambos's avatar

You know you can just open up “Run” then type in “charmap”

Quicker and easier.

mangeons's avatar

“Run”?

eambos's avatar

In XP, there should be a program called Run in your start menu. It allows you to launch any program by typing in the name of the executable. In Vista, you have to search Run within your Start Menu Search. Then, once it’s open, type charmap.

mangeons's avatar

OMG, That’s super spiffy, Eambos! Thanks. :)

wilhel1812's avatar

@gailcalled on a mac, simply type Option+e to create é :)

gailcalled's avatar

@wilhel1812 : Nice to see you again. 9 answers up I wrote, “Hit option (alt) e and get this…´...then hit e again and get this: é. I am using Mac OS 10.5.6.”

I sent tits (she’s the one who asked) the rest of the hints for diacritical marks by email. ¿˚ ç î è é, ø. I love Leopard after two days.

wilhel1812's avatar

well, if you hit option e, you won’t need to hit e affterwards. You can also hit the ´ button, then the e button. Well not on Scandinavians keyboard layouts anyway, correct me if it’s different on the US keyboard.

gailcalled's avatar

é; Nope. I have to hit “option e” and then hit “e” again. ‘e is what happens when I hit the ’ key and then the e. This is the latest iMac keyboard and OS.

wilhel1812's avatar

not the ’ key but the ´key. It’s a diagonal, not one that goes straight down. hmm, let me find a picture.
Here
This is a standard keyboard, it differs a little from my apple keyboard, but this part is the same. You see the button to the left of the backspace button? Pressing that, then the e button will produce é. Also, pressing option and e will make the same result. The button you used was ’, located to the left of the 1 button on my keyboard (over the shift button in the picture) But i just realized that US keyboard layouts isn’t just different by the way the keys are placed, but also the key-combinations :) One learns something everyday! I learned about the US keyboard and you learned about the NO keyboard.
also, we are way off topic…

mangeons's avatar

What keyboards are you using? Mine’s nothing like that. NOTHING.

wilhel1812's avatar

Norwegian iBook G4 Keyboard, the one on the picture is a standard norwegian windows/linux keyboard.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

To get a song out of you héad just listen to a really lame one.

gailcalled's avatar

@wilhel1812: On my Apple keyboard, I have no backspace (it says delete but does the same thing) and no button to the left of it that looks like yours. Mine is = and above it +. My accent grave, pointing from right to left (è) is on the far right, below escape and above tab. The upper case on that button is the cedilla ~.

Acute accent ( é) can only be done by option e, then é. Accent goes from left to right.

You also seem to have three choices on some keys : ” 2 @, for example.

Here’s my keyboard. http://www.apple.com/keyboard/

I have yours and mine up; side by side; there are some differences. How, for example, would you do this? ¿ (That goes in front of a question written in Spanish.)

I have been poking around with control, option (alt), command, shift and various permutations and combinations. Since I have been using this keyboard for only three days, there are lots of tricks I have not yet found. And what is WIN/KEY?

mangeons's avatar

For ¿ it’s Alt+424 for me. I can do a variety of things, such as ☺☻♥♦♣♠↑↓§→δ⌡, etc. just by using my Alt+various numbers, but it has to be on the side keypad or else it won’t work. Not the one along the top.

eponymoushipster's avatar

reading this thread is a great way to get a song unstuck from your head.

gailcalled's avatar

¿Que? Isn’t that what Manuel used to say on Fawlty Towers?

wilhel1812's avatar

The win key is the windows key :) It brings up the start menu on Windows computers. It would be the Cmd key on an Apple keyboard. I couldn’t find a picture of a norwegian Apple keyboard, so i took the closest thing i could find on the web.

To answer your other question, i use the + button. The + button on the norwegian keyboard can write five different characters. A normal hit gives you +, shift + gives you ?, option + gives you ± and option shift + gives you ¿.
Also fn + gives you =, but i normally use shift 0 for that.

It will eventually fade away as you proceed to listen to other songs.
