Do you own (and use!) a reusable water bottle?

Asked by aviona (3260points) March 29th, 2009

…like Sigg, Kleen Kanteen, Nalgene, CamelBak or Love Bottle?

and if no, may I ask: why the hell not?

I do! I have a metal one (it’s hot pink, light pink, and light green) since it’s been said that the plastic ones release bad toxins into your water. It’s pretty, I like it. =] Plus, it has a loop in the twist cap so I can hook it on whatever and take it with me anywhere. Very handy.

I love my green camelback bottle. :)

I have a BPA-free hot pink camelback water bottle, it rocks the house.

Have one, but don’t use it often. Mainly because I don’t often carry water out of the house. Related question… Do the better (more expensive) types still leak? Every one I’ve ever had will leak if it gets turned upside down in a cooler or lunch bag.

I have one but I think it has polycarbonates in it so I have slacked off using it. Also I like to freeze the water partially in it and that supposedly release even more carcinogenic properties. On top of that, someone told me the other day that aluminum bottles are suspected of having a connection to altzheimers, so what the hell is it safe to drink out of these days??? Life is so complicated.

rooeytoo's avatar

I have done some research and it seems the Nalgene bottle I was using has polycarbonates in it. So I looked for stainless steel and that seems safe except you can’t freeze and I like to put the bottle in the freezer until the water or whatever develops a slushy like texture and sometimes I forget and it freezes solid. Do you put your camelbacks in the freezer, are there any warnings saying not to freeze the bottle? Thanks.

I have a cocktail shaker that I reuse and has a belt loop holder thingy. Does that count?

We use kleen kanteens and they are great and don’t leak. I like smaller bottles so I bought another brand (when you couldn’t get kleen kanteens for awhile) – all stainless steel but finish on outside came off in dishwasher. It doesn’t leak either. It does not have plastic on the lip so it takes a little getting used to drinking right from the metal. Also have to be careful not to tap your teeth on the metal. I prefer sports lids.

I think they are gonna make people pay a deposit on plastic water bottles here in new york, in addition to soda bottles. Good thing!

I need to remember to take my steel coffee mug with lid with me when I go out. Trying to remember to use it at Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds etc. – instead of wasting a paper cup.

I’ve had the same Nalgene for the last 8 years. It used to go everywhere I went. I have a collection of about 7 or 8 of these bottles in all shapes and colors. After the recent BPA scare I switched to Sigg but still missed my Nalgene. Now they make BPA-free ones. Just look for the ones with “everyday” on the side and those are safe. I still use the Sigg at home because I love it, but the Nalgene is more durable when in outdoor situations where it bangs up against things and gets dropped.

I can’t tell you the last time I bought a one-time-use water bottle, especially since I have an entire cabinet devoted to reusable ones.

Nalgenes are also great for measuring/mixing/transporting beverages… ;-)

Nalgene, FTW!
They’re like five bucks, come in pretty colors, you can kick their ass all over a mountain, in a book bag, in your car and are generally pretty awesome.

I always have one full of either ice water or tea.

I have a Kleen Kanteen. Or as I call it “The Illiterate Water Bottle”

I have a bunch of them and one of them always goes with me to the gym or on my bike. Otherwise, I simply drink water wherever I go.

I bought two of the BPA free plastic ones, they were like 14 bucks each and they still make my water smell/taste funny. I’m going to try one of the metal ones. I feel like anything that can’t go in the dishwasher can’t really get clean.

sandystrachan's avatar

So whats better Nalgene or Sigg ?

aviona's avatar

I was raised on Nalgene (before all the BPA stuff and now I have a Sigg, but apparently aluminum is bad. I hate the wide mouths of the Kleen Kanteens, but I guess spilling is better than alzheimers…

sandystrachan's avatar

@aviona But the Sigg’s have a coating inside i thought?

Who says its bad for you anyway, isn’t EVERYTHING bad for us tho .

DeanV's avatar

@sandystrachan If you like the looks, go with the Sigg. Otherwise, I would say nalgene or Kleen Kanteen.

It seems everything is going to kill you now, it’s just the question of how fast it works

DandyDear711's avatar

@elijahsuicide – I put run our stainless steel bottles through the dishwasher all the time! The Klean Kanteen ones are wide mouth so I am certain they get clean. DW hasn’t hurt them one bit! The New Wave Enviro Tinted Stainless Steel Water Bottle has a narrow neck so I am not so sure how well it gets clean in the DW. Coating on the outside does peel off.

You CAN freeze water in a Klean Kanteen and with wide mouth you can use ice cubes. If you freeze water in it, you must leave plenty of room for expansion – just like any other bottle.

I am not wild about Sigg bottles. They dent, they are coated on inside with plastic, and lots of don’ts… no freezing, no boiling water, no DW…

Dishwasher.

sandystrachan's avatar

@asmonet Ah i see that is ok then i don’t use/have a Dishwasher. Apart from myself of course

YARNLADY's avatar

Yes, I make extensive use of re-usable bottles, but I prefer the glass ones. I made a wool sleeve for my bottles, to keep them safe, but I sometimes have to resort to the throw-away plastics. I feel guilty whenever that happens.

YARNLADY's avatar

@aviona Thanks for the interesting site. I prefer the ones I make myself to any commercial product.

DandyDear711's avatar

@aviona – love those bottles!

no pun intended – hee hee hee

augustlan's avatar

@aviona Nice bottles, but pricey. Check these out, for only $4.50 apiece!

aviona's avatar

@augustlan super cool & cheap!

OpryLeigh's avatar

I have one but I don’t use it!

sandystrachan's avatar

Just bought two Nalgene 1ltr bottles , a Sigg 1.5 ltr and two smaller kiddie Sigg’s 340ml i think.
Thanks to this question

rooeytoo's avatar

@sandystrachan – I thought nalgene has polycarbinates, that is why I stopped using them. Did you buy the hard clear plastic or the soft opaque kind? I am going into town today and am going to get a camelback. I really think the glass are the best option but too breakable. I guess the best solution is to put your head under the tap and drink it straight!!!

sandystrachan's avatar

I bought the hard gray/green colour plastic Nalgene .
They are all excellent bottles the Nalgene is made of Lexan and wont break according to what i have been told .

Mischiv's avatar

I use a camelbak

I am glad this question was reopened. I am still using my Stigg, it is a couple of years old now. I often put it into the freezer because I like my water like a slushy! Anyhow occasionally I forget and it freezes solid. I think because of the expansion and contraction this causes the colored on the exterior is cracking and flaking off. Not pretty but no health hazard. However around the mouth the same is happening and I wonder if I am drinking paint particles??? Also Stigg is aluminum with an interior coating of some sort. I can’t see that it is flaking but it is difficult to see clearly inside so I am not sure.

Any Stigg experts out there??? I have written to them via their website several times and have received no response, a little disheartening, but maybe they don’t speak english???
