How do you know if you might have Diabetes?

Asked by blaksquid (71points) April 16th, 2009

My mom was diagnosed with diabetes just a few years ago. For a while now I’ve noticed when I get the “shakes”, I feel like I have to sit down and drink a coke. Am I making too much out of this? Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

Frequent urination.
Always thirsty.
Rapid weight loss.
As you say, “shakes” due to low blood sugar.

Go to your doctor. It’s a simple blood test and you’ll know. You may be Type 1 or Type 2.

Best of luck.

Sounds like you are getting low blood sugar, not diabetes.

See a doctor and have a test done to determine your blood sugar levels.

I was having pre-diabetic symptoms while on the birth control pill, but they went away when I stopped taking them. You might be a 50 yr old dude, though, so my anecdata is not applicable.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) often crops up before diabetes. Exercise and good nutrition can be enoung to manage it, but you really have to get a doctor to tell you exactly what you have.

As @cprevite says, the simplest thing is to go to your doctor and get a simple blood test done.

You might also consider rethinking how you eat – multiple small meals of healthy foods (including some protein and not just carbs) spaced out through the day will keep your blood sugar much more stable and may actually help you lose weight if you need to.

Do you have to pee a lot? Frequent urination can be a sign of diabetes because your body is not reabsorping glucose from the urinary tract like it should.

@loser is right. What you’re describing are symptoms of low blood sugar. But I’ll tell you what you might be able to do. I don’t know how close you live to your mother but I’m SURE she has a fingerstick glucose device. I’m diabetic and I have several – companies are DYING to give them away because the money is in the strips and needles. Anyway, maybe she can let you use her glucometer one day when you’re feeling sick? Maybe she can even loan you one of her spares?

Just the same, see a doctor. Diabetes is inheritable. I have it throughout my family, both sides.

Go see a doctor. If you are lucky, you will be in the earliest stages of the disease and much of the damage can be reversed permanently (you will need to make some lifestyle changes).

If sweet coke helps you to get rid of the “shakes” it might be hyperinsulinism, not necessarily diabetes. Like all the others said, go see a doctor to find out.
