Where does your username come from?

Asked by Triiiple (1356points) May 3rd, 2009

Why did you choose that username? For some it might be there gaming names/gamertag, others seem like just personal mix of words.

Triiiple was short for Triiipeldot (Xbox Gamertag) and Triple was a name i started using in MMO’s and other video games. I got it from a friend of mine who read the song title to a name and the artist said something like “Lil Bow Wow Ft. ...” which went to the next page, but he blurted out “Who the hell is triple dot?”

Velvetine was my first Tortoiseshell cat. She was a nut case. I really needed to have a nick and she was the first thing I thought of.

I miss her. : (

Mine came from an old domain name I had, the name was asmodeus.net. Over time, I shortened it to asmo + net. The wiki article I linked doesn’t really cover the character’s full history, he starts off as a serious evil dude and over time became more of a mischievous sprite, more like Puck. I identified more with the sprite.

Now, I’m just used to it. Though I’ve grown out of the reasons why.

And now people tend to read it as asmo-nay, which at first annoyed me, but over the years it’s grown on me. It sounds pretty now, I don’t mind either way.

And being that I’m a painter, the point comes up quite often that it means ‘as monet’ which…I kind of like. :)

Yeah, you can just say asmo-nay. :)

phoenyx's avatar

Some BBS game I used to play (can’t even remember which one now) generated the name “phoenix” for me and I liked it so I kept using it for other stuff. When IRC came along, most servers already had a registered “phoenix” user, so I modified it to “phoenyx.” I’ve been using it ever since.

Triiiple's avatar

@asmonet I thought asmonet was like As Monet the artists lol

asmonet's avatar

@Triiiple: I get that a lot. I edited my response, to include that. I don’t mind it, I think it’s kind of cool that my username has changed and evolved in meaning as I have over the last six years.

DeanV's avatar

It’s just the first letter of my 1st name and then my last name. Boring!

Lightlyseared's avatar

It is the name of a space ship in an Iain M Banks book – Lightlyseared on the Reality Grill.

Fyrius's avatar

In my first year at high school (almost a decade ago now), I dreamed up the name “Fyria” as the name of a fictional planet for a short story writing project. When I first actively got on the internet not much later and needed a username for my first forum account, I inflicted some masculine-noun-Latinisation on it and ended up with “Fyrius”.
I’ve been using it ever since for pretty much every community I join.

The upside is my name is never already in use. :)

AstroChuck's avatar

Mine is from the ninth level of Hell.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

One night dreaming, I recalled a kid’s game called, Hungry Hungry Hippo but in my dream it was, Hungry Hungry Hortence. When I joined this site, I decided I wanted to come in with a name I’ve not used anywhere else to see what kind of interaction there’d be without any reference to my previous online activities, images, etc.

flameboi's avatar

bad temper = flameboi
That was in middle school because i used to react like crazy to anything in a very bad way, then in my teens, flameboi sticked around with the skater kids I used to hang with and also with my mates at the model agency, then I decided to never drop it, I like it :)

asmonet's avatar

@Jayne: From day one, I have been in love with your username and avatar, as you well know. :-*

Jayne's avatar

@asmonet; I did rather pick up on that, yes ;)

Mamradpivo's avatar

“Mam rad pivo” is Czech for “I like beer.” I like it because it’s original and not English, so it’s never taken. My real name is always taken, as are most obvious references to hobbies, so I’ve stuck with the Czech.

TaoSan's avatar

Tao is my real name. I wanted to use it online for the first time in an MMORPG in about ‘02 but the system conventions wouldn’t let me use a 3-letter word.

Thus I tagged on the San, as in Japanese. TaoSan.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

Mine’s obvious. I love the show Murder She Wrote, so I’m a jbfletcherfan.

aviona's avatar

I took both French and Spanish in high school. Avion means airplane in both languages . I liked how the word sounded and loved the languages. I guess I also had a thing for airplanes (but not in any kind of actual mechanical, scientific way of course, haha). My first boyfriend actually gave me a silver necklace with a littleheart charm and a little airplane charm on it. Very endearing.

Anyway, so I started using the username avionairplane (redundant, I know) for various accounts like AIM. At some point along the way it got shorted to aviona. So, there you have it.

The Artful Dodger is Jack Wild’s nickname in Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.

Ask jonsblond.

Likeradar's avatar

People usually mangle my last name when they try to read it. It isn’t pronounced how it’s spelled, and when I was a kid my parents used to tell me to tell people it was pronounced “like radar.” I have a different screen name I use for everything else, but for some reason Likeradar popped into my head when I signed up for Fluther.

Speranza's avatar

‘Speranza’ was initially my name on a dating site. I took it from ‘Lasciate speranza, tutti voi ch’entrate qui’ – “Abandon Hope, all ye who enter here” (Dante’s Inferno). But i thought that was a bit pessimistic, so I shortened it to ‘Hope’!

Facade's avatar

I wanted something unique that I hadn’t used before, and this came up.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Mine comes from the name of Michael Palin’s female character in The Piranha Brothers sketch from the first series of Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

sakura's avatar

Mine is japanese for cherry blossom I think, it was the name of the first house I lived in and have loved the word ever since xx

Jack79's avatar

I recently changed my stage name to Jack (for a variety of reasons, including that I now sing a different style of music to what I was associated with). I was born in 1972, but since “Jack72” was taken, I tried different numbers and ended up with 79.

I can now pretend to be younger and make passes at all the cute under-30s hehe

gailcalled's avatar

Mine is a pun on my real name (or 3/4 of it).

casheroo's avatar

It’s a nickname I have for my son. A lot of people call my son Casheroo.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

It comes from the 13th scene in the ballet Swan Lake, by Tchaikovsky. No. 13 is called “Danse des Cygnes” meaning “Dance of the Swans”. It’s one of the most well-known parts of the ballet. On an older site I was “Lelacdescygnes” which means “Swan Lake” and I was “DKdominic” on wis.dm. I wanted to combine the two names, taking the “swan” theme and combining it with the letter “D” which is my favorite letter and is the first letter of my first name, Dominic.

Supacase's avatar

My daughter has this small rolling suitcase. It is a furry tiger print with a stuffed tiger on the front that has a zipper pocket in it’s belly. She fell in love with it at the store so we bought it for her 2nd birthday. She couldn’t say “suitcase” at the time and would say “supacase” instead. She can say “suitcase” now, but I miss the old name.

miasmom's avatar

I am Mia’s mom. When we named our daughter we thought we were picking a name no one could mess up. Wrong, her name is pronounced Me-uh. You don’t know how many times we get My-uh.

ratboy's avatar

Mine was given to me by my parents.

Jude's avatar

A song we used to sing with our Mom (fun ol’ drunken Irish song) before our family dinners—“Jiggyjig”..then it was “Jiggyjig Mah” (“Mah” being my Mom) after she passed away. Whenever I’d think of her, I would look up and say “Jiiggyjig Mah” wishing that she was part of the festivities (family dinner/function). Now it’s just shortened to “Jmah”...

gimmedat's avatar

ODB’s song “Stomp,” there’s a part where a little voice says, “Gimmedat.” It’s been mine since I heard it a long, long time ago.

hug_of_war's avatar

The only other community I used this on was wis.dm, and simply so former wis.dmers could easily find me.

Hug of war is the name of shel silverstein poem and I just found it stumbling one day and never had a use for it untill i signed up for wis.dm:

I will not play at tug o’ war.
I’d rather play at hug o’ war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I always thought Shel Silverstein looked like a pirate. A tree-hugging pirate. :D

@aprilsimnel: Dude. Me too. Totally.
