What are some fashions or particular clothing pieces/ensembles that are distinctly 90s?

Asked by shrubbery (10326points) July 10th, 2009

So I’m going to a party next week and the theme is 90s. It should be easy, right, since I grew up in the 90s? Not. I don’t think I have anything left that I still fit into, and while I’ve been getting ideas from pictures of Dawson’s Creek and early Friends and stuff I was just wondering if you guys could help me out :)

Thanks Yarnlady, I have looked, as I did say, but I’d like to get some personalised ideas from Flutherites, too. What did you wear in the 90s?

Tink's avatar

Hehe in the 90’s I was wearing a bib and diapers :P
Well I’d say neon colors???

YARNLADY's avatar

@shrubbery What did I wear? Ha, ha the same thing I’m still wearing, t-shirts and elastic waist slacks and have worn for the last 30 years or so.

@Tink1113: Thank you for officially making me feel old.

I dressed much the same as I do now. Jeans and TeeShirt; Wool dress pants and sweater; etc.

It’s the 80s where things got weird.

Tink's avatar

@cprevite Im sorry, there’s nothing wrong with neon, heck I wear it too :)

Hang on for a moment – I’ll just check my wardrobe…

too bad that 90’s kid isn’t around anymore…whatever happened to him?

janbb's avatar

I think he got banned.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I wore a lot of baby doll dresses with my Doc Martens boots in red patent leather. I still have those boots and will wear them every once in a while.

DeanV's avatar

@RandomMrdan He got banned.

But he wouldn’t have know either. He was in diapers for most of the 90’s anyway, and not born for the rest of it…

RandomMrdan's avatar

@dverhey why was he banned?

ubersiren's avatar

Dress like a Spice Girl! Shoes with huge soles, tiny babydoll dress, and sparkly make up! Or, dress like Clair Danes in My So Called Life. Oh, I used to be so jealous of her dark auburn locks and dark berry shaded make up. Or just wear Hammer pants. Or ripped jeans and a flannel shirt slightly fitted for a woman’s body like Alicia Silverstone in the Crazy video when she’s about to jump off the ledge. Also, I remember there being a lot of sunflower baby doll dresses. It would be worn with a sun hat and klonky boots that lace half way up the shin. I love 90s fashion, and I’m not ashamed.

@RandomMrdan I believe it was consistently off topic, low quality responses, fights with other users, etc. It was discussed here.

PARACHUTE PANTS!!!!

Tink's avatar

So thats all you have to do to get banned??!, pft easy

DeanV's avatar

@Tink1113 You have to do it consistently. The mods don’t like banning people, but 90s_kid was pretty irritating…

Tink's avatar

Ah, I’ve read some Q’s were he was being an ass to someone, what was he 14 or something?

DeanV's avatar

About, yeah.

But back to the topic…

Tink's avatar

You guys brought it up ! :)

@shrubbery Id also say, tights, big hair, and those sweater that look way to big on people
But I really don’t know, i’ve only seen people dress like that on t.v

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

lol ripped jeans and flannel and guys with hoop earrings.
as a side note I am really glad scrunchies died with that decade…

Don’t forget those adult vest/t shirt things that looked like a tucked in tight fitting t shirt and had poppers that fasten under your undercarriage.
Oh and denim dungerees!! High waisted pants waistcoats for women (look at past episodes of Friends – everyone seemed to be a Rachel, Monica or Pheobe!! The 90’s seems to be a bit of a mix!

Jeruba's avatar

What were those pants called that had elastic waists and cuffs and came in kind of wild cotton prints?

sakura's avatar

@Jeruba are they the ones that weight lifters tended to wear and possibly still do in some cases??

Jeruba's avatar

@sakura, I have no idea what weight lifters wear. They look like the ones in this picture.

RareDenver's avatar

@Jeruba hahaha

No matter how stupid I looked in the 90’s I never looked that stupid !!

sakura's avatar

@Jeruba YES I used to live near a gym and all the men wore these pants!!!

Some still do!!!!

Can’t see the appeal myself!!

brettvdb's avatar

doc martins, ripped jeans, belly tops, plaid, checkered shirts, babydoll dresses, minimalist simple dresses

shrubbery's avatar

Haha would it be stretching to go as Juliet, as in the Claire Danes Juliet from the 1996 movie? :P

It is funny. In terms of fashion trends, I seem to remember the ‘90’s as being not very remarkable. I guess that there was the“grunge” look, but I can’t remember much else. Now the ‘80’s—that’s a different story!

answerjill's avatar

OK, just looked at my high school yearbook, ca. 1994. Here are a few tips for girls: brownish lipstick, large, round, silver hoop earrings, straight hair with bangs straight across forehead, light-colored denim jeans worn with thick black belts with large squarish silver buckles and Doc Martens, large flannel shirts. A bit earlier in the 1990’s—big hair with puffy, tall, hair-sprayed bangs. (Some people still had this in mid-late ‘90’s.)

I’m sorry I don’t know what they’re called but in many of my baby photo’s my Dad is wearing these awful tracksuits. I’m sure you could find one on ebay?

Team it with a pair of these badboys and I think you’d be onto a winner! Good luck!

RareDenver's avatar

@Taz0007 they were called shell suits

Taz0007's avatar

ah, ok, so the same sort of thing as those hidious adidas ones which have somehow started to reappear!!!
