What do you know about preparing Illustrator files for Print and Embroidery.

Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) July 28th, 2009

I am going for a new job and I would be designing, redrawing, and preparing files for embroidery and uniform prints. I have some basic knowledge on this and training is provided but I would like to be a little more prepared when I go for my interview. Can anyone give some helpful tips or mistakes people commonely make when preparing these types of files? Any information is appreciated. I specifically do not know to much about embroidery.

In my experience each manufacturer has different requirements. So I ask them about their process.

When providing images I ask what format and size they need. (do they prefer CMYK or RGB, what dpi and size)

Regarding file types I have had companies want TIFF, jpeg and psd. Again it depends on the company.

Some only have a limited number of colors so you need to be aware of the limitations of the machines being used and be able to design within their range.

Thank you atleast I know I am on the right track because all that I am aware of. Does anyone know anything about color seperation. That is something I am not very well educated on. Do you need to make each color in it’s own layer?

A lot..just make sure you colour separate..most programs will let you test your resultant file out…beware of the details, leaving nothing to assumption, mistakes are costly. Train yourself to be thorough.
