I am having some medical issues and my last blood work showed my LFT's slightly elevated and my dr wants them tested again. How long should I stay away from alcohol before retesting?

If your LFTs are up, you shouldn’t be drinking at all.

I am aware of that and I have stopped, but when should I retest?

The normal values are are defined as being within 2 standard deviations +/- this means that 2.5% of a healthy population will have liver function tests outside the normal range. Slightly eleveated results may therefore be nothing to worry about but it is important to remember that liver disease can be asymptomatic.

If you are drinking heavily or regulaly and suspect that is the reason the tests are abnormal then you should abstain from alcohol. Probably 4 weeks would be sufficient before retesting.

Its also worth remembering that there are other things that could cause abnormal results including diabetes, obesity, a whole range of medications etc

so waiting a little over a week since I had alcohol might not be long enough??

No tylenol either.

MedHelp says retest in two to three weeks on this forum, and in six weeks to three months on this forum.

I should think your doctor could tell you how long he/she wants you to wait before retesting.

Why didn’t you ask your doctor when s/he told you s/he wanted another test?
