What is this strange lump appeared behind my ear overnight?

Asked by eonblue (45points) November 1st, 2009

I’m pretty sure this is a lymph node infection, but I woke up this morning and literally had a lump behind my ear, on my head, about the size of a nickel. It was sore to touch, and I thought the night before I banged my head into something but didn’t remember, but pretty sure I’d have remembered something like that. I tried “draining” after my shower, and some clear liquid came out and it hurts like hell so I stopped. The night before I had been at my house pulling up “cut-back” adhesive and working with an adhesive stripper called Klean Strip- Adhesive Remover. The active ingredient is methylene chloride. The room was well ventilated but I wonder if this had an effect. My left index finger feels a bit tingly, as well. Do lymph nodes get inflamed literally overnight? Or should I be more concerned? Thanks in advance

I think you should go see your doctor. The back of the ear is much too near the brain not to take precautions.

Yes, lymph nodes can get inflamed over night. However, you might want to show this to your doctor. An inflamed lymph node is often a sign of infection and so you might need antibiotic treatment.

It could possibly be a zit as well. Like this. Yet who knows, a zit could be a lymph node.

You realize it’s the morning after Halloween, right? ;-)

Yeah, see a doctor if it doesn’t go away soon. You might try applying moist heat to it in the meantime. I’ve had a lymph node get swollen on occasion when I got a mosquito bite close to it.

When you say behind your ear? Do you mean right behind the earlobe or higher in your hair line, where? Is the area red? A lymph node would not make the exterior skin red most likely. It could be a pimple or a gathering of oils, or a cyst. If you have no other symptoms I would wait a week and see if it is getting better. BUT it is on your head, so if for any reason you feel it might be getting larger, if you have symptoms that feel like the pain is spreading, go to a doctor right away.

Try the webMD symptom checker, I’ve always found that very helpful.
