Help me decide which Blu-Ray player is best.

Asked by Destructo (16points) November 18th, 2009

I am going to buy a blu-ray player for my dad, and I found 2 possible choices. The Samsung BDP-1400, or the Sharp Aquos BD-HP20U. Which would be the best? Both are the same price, both are used. I looked at reviews on CNET, but the user reviews don’t help at all.

What about a Playstation 3?
It’s still considered to be a solid player and you get all the extra bonuses.

Check the reviews on Amazon.

I would not waste money on the Samsung

As for the Sharp Aquos it’s old technology.

What price range are you looking for? Maybe you should save up more for a better Blu Ray for your dad, like this one at $130 with a nearly 5 STAR review or this Sony at $215 which is the next one we’ll buy…...Why? Because it has QUICK start (our “old” blu ray is SLOW!!!) & allows for Internet streaming. It’s the one to own!

Blu Ray players do one thing. Play Blu Ray discs which is standard technology so it’s not like one is going to give you image quality that others cannot. Therefore, longevity is a big selling point when buying a player.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic Actually all of the models play DVDs and Blu Rays. The older or cheaper models do both much slower then the average crappy DVD player, as they take time to warm up and load.

The Sony listed above also does Internet streaming, not just DVD playing.

I personally would shell out the extra 100 bucks and get a Playstation 3. Even if you don’t play games on it, you can turn it into a media center by hooking it up to your computer + you can browse the internet. But you have to be a little tech savvy, if you’re not go for a regular player.

@markyy We have a computer hooked up to our TV w/out a PlayStation 3.

@SpatzieLover I have a tv hooked up to my computer, does that count? I helped a friend hook up his pc to his ps3 though. He has 2 floors in between his pc and ps3, and by using the ps3 he can remotely control it.

@markyy I wish this guy would come back and tell us more about his dad that he’s buying this for. If the guy’s above 60, I’d say easy-peasy player, under that age, PS3. ;)

I love tv’s hooked up to computers, BTW!

markyy's avatar

@SpatzieLover Well it’s a small tv, 20 inch :) I read over the part where he mentions it’s for his father.. I think I’m going to need glasses, a bigger screen, or a dyslexic test. If it’s for his father just get a regular one, you don’t want him on the phone every time he wants to play a movie.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@markyy ;D That’s what I was thinking…“Um yeah so I put in the movie, and it’s not playing. Which remote do I use now???

@Destructo Did you know that universal remotes are one of the TOP gifts given to parents? Maybe that should be a part of your gift-giving budget, too!

markyy's avatar

@SpatzieLover Did you know setting up universal remotes is in my top 100 of things I hate to do for my parents :P

SpatzieLover's avatar

@markyy Hehehehee! My husband, too! But it usually works to prevent phone calls at 8pm that require the urgency of getting some dry historical movie playing NOW!

A playstation 3

I already own a ps3. I’m trying to get something for my dad. He personally doesn’t want a multi-purpose machine. I understand fully that the ps3 is the greater value, but that’s not what I asked. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ungrateful for the responses. I asked which is the better of the two.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Destructo You’d be blowing time and money on either of those two…Maybe if you just want to get him any blu-ray player wait until “Black Friday” and get one of the door buster priced ones then.

Go to one of the large retailers of these products and have a rep. help getting one for your Dad.

@Destructo See this link for where to find a $78 blu ray player next Friday.

Type Mac Blu-ray Player into Google and you’ll find many. As I know, Macgo Mac Blu-ray Player is the first Blu-ray Player software for Mac in the world. With an external Blu-ray drive, you can play almost all Blu-ray discs with it. They have been holding a 33% off discount for a while, maybe you could try this one.
