What temperature do you like to eat your food at?

Asked by Ame_Evil (3051points) November 19th, 2009

I notice that I like my food as hot as it can get without seriously burning my mouth. Warm food just annoys me and I find food tastes better when it is hot. I also quite like spicy food, so maybe this is linked. This is of course ignoring foods like cookies and icecream :D.

Why I am asking this is because I often eat my food really fast, which is a combination of my hunger (as I have meals late), and possibly this as I don’t want to let my food get cold. However everyone else I eat with doesn’t seem to do this, and my friend even has to wait for the food to get colder because its “too hot” for her and she likes it warm.

What are your food preferences. Do you like hot food and spicy food? Or do you like your food warmish and not too keen on spice. Or are these two things not “linked” for you?

I like hot pizza. But I do like it cold the next day.

@ChazMaz Oh yeah pizza is an exception. I love hot (freshly baked) and cold pizza almost equally. I also like mixing custard with ice cream so theres the contrast between hot and cold, but again you have to eat it pretty fast or else the ice cream just melts and makes the whole thing just warm.

Great question. I often think about this between my wife and I. She can stand hot/spicy food better than I can. This is probably because she grew up on and loves spicy foods. I don’t mind eating my food if it gets luke-warm to semi-cold, she absolutely hates when her food gets cool. I guess it depends on how you were brought up and what your tastebuds can stand.

@ChazMaz Spot on with the pizza.

Really hot. Always. I need it steaming.

Yeah, I like things lukewarm in terms of caliente hot. Too cold is usually not good for me, but I don’t want it to be so hot that I have to keep blowing on it or else it’ll burn my mouth. As for picante hot, I like very spicy things, but not to the point where I have to keep a glass of ice water at hand. However, I did eat this whole jar of the world’s most picante salsa. I needed ice water, but it just had such a great flavor. Basically, I prefer things warm to hot (and I can tolerate spicy food much better than plenty of people I know), but not uncomfortably hot.

I have been known to eat cold pizza before…it can be good.

I like to microwave my ice cream before I eat it.

It’s too cold to taste otherwise.

Hot, hot! I think I need to put a heating pan under my plate!! So often food in a restaurant comes to me lukewarm-just can’t stand to think of paying for that. On the other side when it is cold, I can eat that too, cold pizza is breakfast.

i know it’s sacrilege, but i cannot eat cold pizza. at all. i got sick on it once, and now i have to at least nuke it.

Like @eponymoushipster, I like my food (and beverages) at moderate temperatures. I get looks when I order “Iced” Tea with very little ice. My morning coffee sits in the cupholder for at least 20 miles before I can start sipping on it.

I can eat pizza at room temperature, but not refigerator temperature. We have Brita pitcher and it must stay in the fridge to prevent mold/mildew, so I pour my water, then nuke it for 30 seconds so I can drink it.

I also eat rather slowly, taking small bites and treasuring the flavors and textures. I love spicy food, but flavorful not just lip-rash inducing; so usually the “medium” level of spicy-hot suits me well.

@toomuchcoffee911 yeah my friend has to do that as well so you are not alone

If something is supposed to be hot, I want it hot. If I’m drinking coffee, I want it HOT. If it’s supposed to be cold, I want it cold. If a cold drink has melted ice in it, I go get more. But I have to be careful with hot, hot food. I have a top partial & when that stainless steel gets hot, I’ve burnt the roof of my mouth so bad that I’ve had blisters. I especially have to be careful with pizza. I, too, can’t stand cold pizza. I want food the temperature it’s supposed to be.

If you put it on the table and it begins to scorch the wood… it’s just right.
(Except for pizza and chinese which i prefer cold).

At around 139°.

I’m not kidding. I like my food and hot bevvies to be hot.

DominicX's avatar

@aprilsimnel

I thought 125° was the danger limit on water heaters…isn’t that enough to scald?

aprilsimnel's avatar

Nope! That’s the internal temperature of a medium rare steak.

BTW, the internet? Is awesome!

It’s all about the type of food for me as to what temperature. Hot drinks and soups I like hot-hot. Meat I eat rare so it’s never going to be hot. I also eat slow, always have but I make an effort now as an often rushed adult because slow helps my digestion and more accurately regulates my feeling of full so I don’t overeat.

I like my food. Period.

Temperature doesn’t really matter except with sushi – cold sushi should be cold otherwise all I can think of is petri dishes – and dishes with melted cheese – the cheese should still be melted and soft. I do like spicy food very much, but I also like other foods. Basically, I like to eat good food, and the temperature is not the most important thing.

As to my speed of eating – I have always been a fast eater, which is probably part of the reason I struggle with weight. For the past few years I have deliberately tried to eat more slowly with some success. I have lost a bit of weight and need to lose a bit more, so maybe I am not eating slowly enough (or maybe its those little extras like real butter and mayo that certain foods require).

The temperature of my food isn’t very important to me. I don’t like it too hot, but that’s about the only preference.
