What recent medical advances will make the biggest impact when mainstreamed?

Asked by Ghost_in_the_system (2035points) December 17th, 2009

New drug creation, genetic testing, stem cell research, biological research: within all of these, new developments crop up, bringing new therapies, cures, and preventatives. What recent development do you think will make the biggest impact when FDA, drug companies and economics mainstream their use?

I don’t know too much about it, but if they can work out that cure for aids they would probably quite the mainstream attention.

I concur with stem cell research. They can already grow organs out of them.

I’d love it if someone found a cure for AIDS or cancer though

I would add this to the top 5 list: deciphering new viruses, understanding their potential, creating monitoring and defense strategies, raising public awareness and having global pandemic plans ready for implementation when needed.

SARS, bird flu and swine flu are relatively mild precursors of what’s in store for us with more and more globally connected human communities. The proper mechanisms to deal with this are becoming mainstream in almost every country. So if a real pandemic killer shows up, we are ready and it won’t lead to a complete disaster saving millions of lives.

Medical marijuana. You may not be cured, but you won’t care.

Stem Cells are definitely going to be the next major breakthrough in mainstream medical technology.

@ratboy I wish, I wish =)

Stem cells. I can’t remember what the procedure is exactly but I believe it is stem cells….where a new organ can be grown from existing tissues. Removing the need for transplants.

It would be a medical breakthrough if any Holistic type drug were to be be created that actually worked.
