Did you give someone a gift this year that was really well received?

Asked by SABOTEUR (14377points) December 26th, 2009

I’m not a big fan of reserving one day a year to spend money on people. If there’s something I want to buy for someone, I’ll buy it any time of the year. And, if there’s something I want for myself, I’ll buy it; I don’t expect someone else to buy it for me. It just seems manipulative to expect/require people to spend for Christmas. (But, that’s just me.)

Be that as it may, I found myself looking at a mobile GPS unit that was on sale, thinking it would be a perfect gift for my wife’s niece. My wife was against such a purchase, but this particular unit happened to fall within the price range my wife and I had agreed to spend on her. (As it turned out, I purchased a more expensive model since I questioned the reliability of the one on sale.)

My wife’s niece loved it…so much so that she called me the next morning praising it’s performance in helping her navigate to a destination 115 miles away. (I knew she liked to travel but…DAMN!)

Have you been blessed to know that a particular gift you’d given someone was really appreciated?

My niece got a whale Pillow Buddy from me. It was a HUGE hit.

For me big sis, a bunch of sentimental stuff. I got a few tears out of her.

@hawaii_jake !!! Cash is always well received. Way to go, Jake!

Nice to know that the effort you took selecting a particular gift wasn’t a waste of time, huh? Nice going, @jmah

We haven’t gotten to even have our Christmas yet with our family, thanks to the blizzard we got over Christmas, but we got our granddaughter a pair of Carhartt lined bibs so she can go hunting with her boyfriend. She’s going to have a stroke. She’s wanted them so bad. It’s going to be a thrill watching her open them.

SABOTEUR's avatar

@jbfletcherfan The anticipation of your granddaughter receiving the bibs must be “killing” you. You’ll got to update us on the event.

I gave one of my oldest friends a 1,600 yr old bronze Roman coin, with the message that it would make him feel young. He almost teared up, and said it was a humbling experience to hold such a piece of history in his hand.

God, I love eBay!

Wow, @camouflage_pants : Glad I’m one of your bestest of friends!
(hint-hint)
Nice going, pal!

I gave my best friend a silver crow skull necklace. She’s also an artist. She positively swooned.

I gave my Dad the Brian Eno and David Byrne album Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. He and my mom immediately started fighting about who would get to listen to it in their car first.

I gave each of my very young grand-nephews a card with a bill in it. The older (6) boy got very excited and said, “Oh, a dollar.” His mother pointed out the extra two zeros to him.
The younger enjoyed chewing on the card.

I bought my sister this:

She seemed to like it quite a lot, especially its “crystal” eyes (they were not crystal). Such a shame that I have to give credit to my mum for choosing it as I didn’t know what to get her and she said my sister is always losing her rings. That’s what you get for living away from home – no clue what people already have and what they need :x.

My son was exceedingly happy with the iPod I gave him. My daughter seems very happy with the car I gave her, although she wishes it had GPS in it. My answer to that was to give her a map. What does she want? Her Blackberry has internet access and can produce MapQuest maps very easily.

My wife loves her juicer and her subscription to Mental Floss magazine.
@jonsblond is going to lover hers, too.

I gave my daughter a 40×50 cm b&w photograph of her and her fiance, printed onto canvas, it seemed to hit the spot. Mother was happy.

I gave my nephew’s girlfriend a SNUGGIE .. and she was excited ..and very happy ! Only cost me about $15.00 to make this girl’s day…. and that made ME feel good !

When I was little, probably 4 or 5, my grandma was in Homemakers’ Club. They had luncheons or each did the same craft – stuff like that. One time they were working on sock monkeys and she was working really hard to finish it so she could give it to me. When she gave it to me I said, “I don’t want it – its ugly!” She thinks it is the funniest thing and it is now one of those stories that is told about me whenever embarrassing childhood story time starts up.

This year I tucked a sock monkey Christmas ornament in the box with her “real” gift. She laughed and laughed. It was the highlight of my Christmas.

My Grandmother passed away about ten years ago. This year I gave a framed photo to my Grandfather of the three of us together when I was young. I think he really appreciated it. :)

SABOTEUR's avatar

I’m sure I would have appreciated it too. Nice going, @meagan.

If I read more experiences like yours, I probably wouldn’t be such a humbug at Christmastime. Thanks for sharing your experience, @Supacase!

SABOTEUR's avatar

Thanks @Kelly_Obrien. Next time, though, try not to bog your answer down with excessive verbiage.

I’m joking!

Nice to know people still appreciate simple, yet thoughtful gifts. Hats off to you, @HighShaman

@delirium Cool…any chance we could see a picture of it?
@wildpotato: Made ya you feel good, huh? Well done!
@Adagio: Very creative. I’m sure Mother wasn’t the only one happy. Good job.
@Ame_Evil Beautiful!

SABOTEUR's avatar

@Darwin My wife and I got some of that too. You go out of your way to make this the “best Christmas ever”, but sometimes you can’t seem to do enough.

(((sigh)))

@tinyfaery Mental Floss magazine? Alrighty, then…good job!

One of those. I have their hummingbird and lizard as well. Honestly one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen.

SABOTEUR's avatar

Cool @delirium. Your best friend is blessed, indeed, to have a friend as thoughtful as you.

Yes. I gave Hubbs a paper making set complete with screens, mixer and molds. He grinned that one super-special grin. We gave mom a beautiful vase and she absolutely loved it. (I got a microscope and may or may not have squealed.)

I love giving someone something they love but didn’t even know they needed. I go hunting so when I bring home the ‘kill’ and it’s well-received… it’s a magical feeling.

SABOTEUR's avatar

Sounds like a very merry Christmas in your household, @gemiwing.
Be careful with that rifle!

@SABOTEUR I keep the safety on unless it’s a 75% off sale. That separates the casual shopper from the homemakers.

Remind me not to make you angry.
