What is this clicking noise?

Asked by Shield_of_Achilles (1906points) January 9th, 2010

I have a 96 Dodge Ram. When the engine is running there is a clicking noise. I replaced the timing belt but it’s still there. I know it’s not engine knocking. Any ideas?

Probably the tappets on the rocker arms. Normally not serious.

The important thing is… how is the car performing? If it’s running well, not stalling, starting okay, then I’d be inclined to let that go.

Tappets? How full is the crankcase? Maybe you are down a quart or two of oil.

In cold weather, motor oil becomes thick and settles at the bottom of your engine. when you first start your motor, it takes a few minutes for the oil to circulate inside the engine in order to protect the internal moving parts. this is normal for most all gasoline engines. i would check the oil level to make sure you are not running your engine without the proper level of oil.

Want us to do your windshield, too? Check the tires?

@Shield_of_Achilles Check your oil every time you fuel up. Running low oil levels will destroy that engine PDQ.
