A woman sexually assaults David Beckham and gets away with it...double standard?

Asked by Ansible1 (4841points) January 26th, 2010

While David Beckham was standing outside a hotel in Italy talking with reporters, Italian prank tv show host Elana Di Cioccio snuck through the crowd and grabbed a handful of Beckham. She said it was to test if he actually measured up to his Armani ads which show him to be well endowed. Afterwards she yelled “E piccolo, Beckham!” which translates to “Beckham is small!” She was also quoted saying: “I touched it but it’s small. David you have conned us all. What did you use, cotton wool? It’s all a trick”.

The tv host was not arrested and the segment later aired on her tv show. I just wonder what kind of reaction her audience has, i wonder if she’s praised for “uncovering the truth”.

What shocks me is why she would want to.

If it was a man groping a woman he would be in jail.
Just sayin’

I do not think it is right on any level to do what that reporter did.

wilma's avatar

If some guy came up and grabbed a celebrity woman’s crotch, I hope that he would be arrested and charged with a crime. The same should go for this woman or any woman that does that to a man.

Sophief's avatar

@Dog You are right, women get away with far more than men do.

wundayatta's avatar

I’m speechless.

In so many ways.

the prank acknowledges male power in a kind of subtle way… it comes across like a comparatively powerless group (women) pulling one over on the dominant group (men). whereas a man doing this to a woman would come off as him abusing the power we know that they have.

it a culture with a vast power disadvantage the man would do the pranking.

Meh. I hate DB anyway. Who cares.

Snarp's avatar

It may have something to do with whether or not Beckham wanted to press charges.

Sophief's avatar

@Snarp He probably wouldn’t, wouldn’t know how to.

ucme's avatar

Someone said golden globes she thought they said golden balls. She probably wanted to wash his socks anyway.

ninjacolin's avatar

it’s not about whether a man does it to a woman or vice versa.. it’s a matter of whether an individual feels like pressing charges or even complaining about it. a joke is a joke to some people.

Dog's avatar

@ninjacolin I am pretty certain the person who was groped then referred to as small to the world did not think it was funny. Is he supposed to laugh it off and take it because he is a man? Would a woman be pressured to just put up with it or would womens rights groups make an example of the reporter?

By the way. I have no idea who the victim is so my answer is in no way defending him.

JLeslie's avatar

No matter what gender you don’t touch someone unless they have given you permission to touch them, especially sexual organs. It is simply wrong, and I don’t find it funny at all. I would not go as far to say she should be arrested, but if she was doing things like this habitually something should be done to curtail her behavior.

What a revolting woman.

Women have put up with ass grabbing and tit rub ups from disgusting men for years. No one even heard of the term “sexual harassment” until the last 15 or so years.
It doesn’t make it right, but somewhere deep down inside it makes me want to yell, “So how does it feel?” Not that this particular guy is guilty, it is just a sense that men don’t always understand how awful it is to be objectified.
I am not defending her in any way, but I’m just saying, you can’t compare one incident to the plight women have suffered for centuries.

JLeslie's avatar

@judi you made me think of the reputation of the Italian men still grabbing women. If that is true, it might seem more appalling to us, Americans, than the Italians. Italian women might be very in line with what you point out “so how does it feel?”

Jude's avatar

I just watched the video. I don’t understand a word that she’s saying, but, she is irritating and comes off as obnoxious.

Sure it’s harassment. What an ass. Someone needs to smack her upside the head with a cannoli.

Judi's avatar

@JLeslie ; Yes, I’m old enough to remember a different time. My sister had a job interview once where she was actually told that she would be required to sleep with the boss once a week.

aprilsimnel's avatar

It’s wrong, IMO, to grab anyone sexually who doesn’t want it or anticipate it, even as a joke.

wilma's avatar

Ya, I watched the video, I agree @jmah . What an ass.
She seems kinda psycho.
You could never pay me enough to be a celebrity.

ninjacolin's avatar

he’ll probably sue eventually.

Snarp's avatar

This is unfair, it was clearly cold. Hasn’t she heard of shrinkage?

jrpowell's avatar

I’m sure he could press charges if he wanted too. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if the entire thing was planned. He gets in the news and she gets people to watch her show.

Facade's avatar

@Judi My sentiments exactly. Double standards exist. That’s just how it is.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

Double standards.She is despicable.

MagsRags's avatar

It is a double standard but I can’t accept it as OK based on that.

I just watched the video with the sound off and I’m appalled at her sniggering self congratulatory behavior. I had no trouble mentally reversing the genders of the perpetrator and victim – I felt a little nauseated. I hope he sues her ass.

BTW does anyone know if she usually dresses in a man-style suit and tie for her TV show? Or was she trying to strengthen the gender bending vibe?

Ria777's avatar

@Facade: Double standards exist. That’s just how it is.

“that’s just how it is” doesn’t cut it.

smashbox's avatar

She definitely should have been held accountable for what she did, just as if a complete stranger hand done it with someone who wasn’t famous. The law isn’t for some, it’s for everyone who breaks the law.

I guess it would be up to him though if he wanted to press charges, guess he didn’t.

galileogirl's avatar

In Italy groping women is more expected, even if not openly acceptable . She is a TV reporter. It might have been more effective if she had greeted Andrea Pirlo that way. Poor British Beckham didn’t know what to do. On the other hand if she had shaken Pirlo she might have really found out what it meant to be groped, grabbed and gotten

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I never accept double standards as okay. Things like this piss me off. I know that it’s more common for a woman to be groped by a man, but that doesn’t mean that when it happens in the reverse that it should be ignored (and that includes men being groped by other men). Of course, this is a foreign country, it probably makes the whole business of legal action more difficult.

But just because a double standard exists, doesn’t mean we have to accept it.

Furthermore, David Beckham is hot. Wasn’t sure who you were referring to, but I Googled him and wow… :)

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

It shouldn’t be any more socially acceptable to grab a man’s crotch than a woman’s crotch

trailsillustrated's avatar

he’s a good natured bloke and didn’t want to make a big deal about it. he was embarrassed

Nullo's avatar

@JLeslie
You’re against a congratulatory slap on the back, then? That kind of thing can only be done on the spur of the moment.
“Dude, congrats. May I slap you on the shoulder in order to express my enthusiasm for your accomplishment?”

JLeslie's avatar

It is an exaggeration. I might touch your arm without permission, but not likely, not if I don’t know you. In the old days a gentleman never extended his hand first, he waited for a women to offer her hand first for a handshake, or might have been a kiss on the back of her hand back in the day. Then somehow men felt it ok to just grab women. Changes over time.

Allie's avatar

I don’t think it’s right, but I think she basically “got away” with it since he didn’t press charges.

HankMoody's avatar

@Allie You’re exactly right. On the other hand, I think he would look like a bit of a whiner if he pressed charges against a woman for grabbing his junk.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. It always is. Even in this great world of gender equality no one really believe that.

casheroo's avatar

I found it disgusting that she did that. I wish he would have pressed charges.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir The world we live in, especially the industrialized nations. True gender equality is a myth. Females and male are different, they are made to go together like peanut butter and jelly not jelly and jelly; that is what people see, to misunderstand.

casheroo's avatar

@johnpowell I don’t think his wife would have allowed that.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central yes gender equality is a myth – but not for the reasons you state. and I think you have a fundamental misconception as to what is meant by gender equality.
