Is the factory-issued waterproofing enough, or should I scotchgard?

Asked by buckyboy28 (4961points) February 13th, 2010

I bought a new pair of Timberland work boots today as my old ones were wearing out after about 4 years. The tag says that they are waterproof, but should I scotchgard them to be extra sure? I live in New England, so I will be using them to shovel and to get to classes in snowy and rainy conditions.

I would personally use aftermaket stuff as well. I think the factories use just enough of their “waterproof chemical” to get away with putting it on the label.

It depends. Are they chemically treated or do they have Gore Tex? My North Face shoes are Gore Tex and they stay dry as factory issued.

@willbrawn I agree with you. I think using another product after you get it home would help insure the life of your purchase.

I like Nikwax. They have separate products for smooth leather and nubuck/suede. I’ve put many miles on my Vasque Sundowners, including lots of rain and snow, and the leather is holding up great. http://www.nikwax.com/

It’s worth the small investment after such a big one. Especially as you are going to put them through the ringer.
