How often do channels on www.veetle.com go off-air?

Asked by mathwhiz1 (264points) February 23rd, 2010

I just discovered that this site added Animal Planet a couple days ago and I’m so excited because I have been dying to watch this channel. The problem is that it is currently off-air. Does this happen regularly with sites like this?

This is apparently similar to YouTube as the content is user added.

The problem arises when whoever is posting the material does not legally own the broadcast rights. Whoever started the Animal Planet channel is apparently not legally entitled to use either the name (which is copyright protected) nor any of their content. That’s called piracy and if the owners of the Veetle site don’t have it removed, they are vulnerable to legal sanctions, fines, and going out of business.

It’s the same for any site which allows users to upload content. That’s exactly what happens all the time on YouTube.

So, the answer to the question is, YES. This happens all the time on sites like this. If it didn’t, the site would be shut down.
