Why don't I recieve push notifications on my iPhone when I'm connected to my wireless home network?

Asked by rawrgrr (1568points) March 12th, 2010 from iPhone

For some strange reason I don’t recieve any push notifications when I’m connected to my home network with wifi. Internet works but I don’t recieve any push notifications until I leave my network then they all rush to my phone. Is there a reason to this? It’s only my home network that does this. Thanks

@patg7590 Thanks for that. It says that i might have a firewall that is blocking port 5223. Do you know how I can find that out on a Mac?

I was also assuming a firewall related issue.

Can you call your Internet service provider. Perhaps the problem stems from their settings. Usually that’s a good thing as it keeps your computer protected but if you have a Mac, you’re not as susceptible to random attacks as you would be if you used a PC.

On your mac, under Snow Leopard 10.6 go to System Prefs->Security->Firewall.
Here you can turn your firewall on/off.

You may want to check the firewall on your router though, as your iPod is the device having the issue. To do this, open your web browser and go to your routers address. This can be found in System Prefs->Network->Router. Then you will be prompted for credentials for the router. Usually the default is something like admin/password or blank/admin. Look for port forwarding.

All of this seems a little strange though, I dont think this should be an issue for the average users configuration. Id try calling your ISP and see if they block that port for some reason. Not really sure.

@patg7590 Thanks for the response but the router doesn’t show on the computer for some reason. Is there a way I can do this from the Linksys settings page in the browser?

Oh nevermind, I resolved the problem by following these instructions.

“On my iphone I went to Settings>Wi-Fi>My Network>DNS

I changed my DNS setting to 8.8.8.8 which is the IP Address of Googles DNS Servers check the following link for more details http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
