Asked by erikaziger (345points) March 29th, 2010

This questions is for people who seem to have somewhat RELIABLE cars that don’t break down all the time:

How much do you spend on gas per week?
What is your monthly car payment?
How much do you spend on insurance?

You’re only soliciting figures that are operating costs… how about maintanance costs (as oppose to repair costs)? These would include Oil/Filter/Lube jobs/ Brake jobs/ wiper/ tire wear, car wash, just to name a few…. They may not be expended every month but they do add up over the course of the year.

Hyundai XG300L -

Weekly gas – $35.00
Car payment – $0.00 (all paid off – YEAH!!)
Insurance – $77.00 (State Farm)
Breakdowns since I’ve owned it – never
The freedom that comes with owning your own automobile – priceless.

There are some places you can just walk to. For everything else, there’s vehicles.

Shouldn’t mileage and storage costs figure into this? Not to mention “loss of opportunity” cost for having sunk capital into a vehicle that could be put to more productive use.

I decline to answer, even though I like my car and couldn’t live my lifestyle without it.

A month of gas is about $80.00
A month of insurance (full coverage with $500 deductible) is about $160
Car payment is $259

Total: $499

I have a 2005 Mini Cooper S and the only problem I have ever had with it was the air conditioner.

What is your monthly car payment? None, it’s paid off. When we had one, I think it was about $350
How much do you spend on insurance? I think it’s close to $500 a year
When was the last time your car broke down? Never. I’ve had a couple of flat tires, but this car has never, ever let me down.

I will cry when I have to give up this car.

I have 2 cars. A 1996 Jeep, and a 2006 Saturn Vue.

How much do you spend on gas per week? $100. Keep in mind we drive 200 miles North once a month.
What is your monthly car payment? Both are paid off.
How much do you spend on insurance? About $150 total.
When was the last time your car broke down? The Saturn is in the shop now, but under warrenty. The Jeep had a bad starter last year. Other than that, both cars have been great.

I’ve got an 07 focus. I pay about 260/m. Maybe 80 a month on gas. I really don’t drive very much at all because I work mostly from home (thank god). I haven’t had my car break down yet. That being said, I’m about to trade mine in for something new. So thanks for asking this question – this will help me, too. :)

I spend a good amount on cleaning supplies – uncontrolled, I may spend $100 on one outing – But at least my car looks and smells like the new car it was a year ago.

How much do you spend on gas per week?
Around $50 or so on average

What is your monthly car payment?
LMFAO!!
It’s was a $300 Craigslist car

How much do you spend on insurance?
About $500/year

When was the last time your car broke down?
Phhhht!
It’s a Toyota; they don’t break. I drove my last Corolla with a blown head gasket and it didn’t die. I melted the brakes on it and they still worked. I drove this one with dead struts and it still handled though uncomfortably. The only way these old AE82 Corollas break down is intentional sabotage!

When we average out the entire expense of our car – payments (interest), insurance, gas, up keep and depreciation (5 year life) – $500 per month

jerv's avatar

@YARNLADY Depreciation? I never considered that an expense. Then again, I’ve been the final owner of most of my cars, so resale hasn’t really been an issue for me and the few cars I have sold, I turned a profit on. Hell, I could get more than $300 for my current wheels :)

YARNLADY's avatar

@jerv Ha, Ha, we’ve discussed this before. When I buy a car, the initial price is not the only expense, but the replacement cost has to be figured in as well. My son bought a car for $100 from a charity, drove it clear across the country and for another year, before it was completely inoperable – with zero insurance or maintenance.

jerv's avatar

@YARNLADY For me, replacement cost is usually less than what you pay a month, and I think my ride has more style.

YARNLADY's avatar

@jerv Dependability is my most important consideration, style is not even in the top ten of my list, but I have also owned old cars in the past.

jerv's avatar

@YARNLADY The main reason I got the car I did was that it’s a Toyota. The skull on the hood was just a bonus :)

My cars a VW PAssat 1.8t….
Petrol £160.00 per mth
Insurance £45.00 per mth
Monthly payment £0
Last break-down: I had to replace the battery over the Xmas period, but it was 5yrs old.

Fred931's avatar

My Car: N/A

Fuel: In the gas tank
Insurance: Keeping both eyes on the road
Monthly Payment: Whatever I get for washing the car
Last Break-Down: When I got pissy because my mother yelled at me while I was making a left turn

downtide's avatar

Zero. I spend £44 (about $65) on public transport per month, that gets me unlimited bus trips within the city.

YARNLADY's avatar

@downtide I am often tempted to get rid of our car, but recently the public transportation has suffered a drastic cut-back, and many routes eliminated. I’m glad I don’t depend on that.

downtide's avatar

I have to, because I’m visually disabled and unable to drive. I have to live somewhere with a decent public transport system otherwise I’d be unable to work. Thankfully most UK cities are well served. It would be impossible for me to live in a rural area or small town though.

Ludy's avatar

I got to change my answer, insurance: $270, bastards, just because they found out that is a new car, my payment was already high because of the SR-22, then a law passed in WI that everybody had to have certain minimum of coverage, frrom $79 to $146 and now $270, I can’t belive it! Just happened today by the way.
