What does <.< or ^-^ or >:< or >'< mean?

Asked by breedmitch (12171points) March 9th, 2008

Please know that I’m a new intraweb user (2 yrs) but I have been typing all my life and have never come across any of these words or symbols before. Am I missing something? Is it text-speak?

i think they are supposed to to be facial expressions

i find them to be extremely annoying and pointless thats just my opinion and not judging anyone who uses them.

I use the direction eyes once in a while. Shifty eyes, usually.

I don’t know what the second two are.

They’re emoticons, like :) or :(, except they you don’t have to tilt your head to read them. What exactly your examples mean, I’m not sure, but they are representative of some sort of facial expression.

Aha! They are facial expressions. I only use the first 2. As for the others i have no idea what they mean.

^_^ = Happy Face
<.< = Looking away, Shifty eyes.
>.< = Pained expression, exited?
. = Annoyed.
O_O = Shocked Face, Wow!!
O_o = Weirded Out.
$_$ = Money face (=P)

I think thats all the faces i’ve ever used. I find they express emotions well ^_^

Ugh….it hasnt posted the annoyed face

Thats a larger verion of it, using dashes and underscores. You can also do it using dashes and full stops.

We could use a “who gives a sh**t ” face.

What about this one |~..~|

no idea.

Looks like a disturbed gerbil…

Oh my, I read these all as cat expressions :0 =^^=

My original question was intended to be a back-handed way of asking the collective to stop using such text speak. We had just had a large influx of new users and I was probably being rude. I have since become more flexible and have even used ”:)” myself. My current pet peeve is cheebdragons hearts, stars, and clovers. It’s a slippery slope. ;)

Well, at least I acquired some new cat signs out of it. Did you make those up?
I guess you don’t eat Lucky Charms, do you? I’d put a text speak here, but i don’t want to push your tolerance level.

breedmitch's avatar

I’d probably make an exception for you since you have expressed yourself with such eloquence and good grammar in most all of your posts.
I’m ashamed to say it, but the question was initially directed at Delirium when she was just a wee, baby jellyfish. Now I absolutely adore her and she can do no wrong. (It’s her blatant rebuking of any poster who dares to question scientific fact that won me over.)

Yes, the first two symbols I had seen here. The last two I made up in an attempt to show how ridiculous they could look.

I was trying to make all the lucky charms, just for you!

I will give up making most or those shapes…...only as an attempt to meet you half way…..but I won’t give up using ∗ ♥ or the ☯ .......deal????

delirium's avatar

Breedmitch: that absolutely made my day!

MarcIsMyHero's avatar

The first two are emoticons based off those cute little japanese manga and anime type characters. the last two i was having a struggle with. glad to see you made them up. was about to start cross referencing the Kama Sutra for Dummies in a last ditch effort.

beccalynnx's avatar

kawaii_ninja had them right.

i think >:< is supposed to be angry. that’s one that you have to look at sideways.

and i have no clue what >’< is.

cheebdragon's avatar

a very angry wink?

beccalynnx's avatar

that could quite possibly be…
