Do you think it is hypocritical to utilize a loophole or law that you don't agree with?

Asked by JLeslie (65444points) May 22nd, 2010

For instance, I am generally against affirmative action, but if I had kids and they could use their Hispanic status to have an advantage I would use it. Although, if it came to a vote I would vote my conscience, not vote for personal gain.

I also think taxes should be raised while we deal with the federal deficit, but I am not going to pay more money to the government then the IRS requires at this time.

I hate the spending some companies do entertaining clients, but if I was offered a vacation by a company or am given freebees I probably would not turn it/them down.

How do you feel about things like this? What do you do?

At the end of the day, you have to look in the mirror and feel good about your conscience. Have you set a fine example for your children? The exceptions are probably different for everyone. I try to be consistent…but, for everyone, I suppose it depends upon the challenges.

Tunica, Mississippi is a classic example of utilizing a loophole in the law, for personal gain.

In Tunica, there are approximately seven casinos that exist, simply because of a loophole in the law. each casino, in that state by law, has to be sitting on river water. old Mississippi law concerning riverboat casinos that goes way back in time. so, some intelligent person came up with the idea to build river waterways that would stretch out into the flatland and build casinos on barges, which would float on the water from the Mississippi River. technically, the casino barges are legal, because of the loophole in the law.

This is one of the very few areas in my life that I have trouble with ‘gray areas’. Like you, if the current law is to my advantage… even if I found it distasteful, I’d probably use it. Even more so if my children would be at a disadvantage if I didn’t. I’d feel like a giant hypocrite, but I’d probably still do it.

I think a lot of us are guilty of this kinda thing…I often hear people nagging on big names like Hollywood, but don’t even try to tell me that these people don’t rent blockbuster movies every now and then, or again, people who say that humans are the scum of the Earth and that our planet belongs to the animals and it would be better off without us…yet I’d love to see any one of those people willingly release their lives in the name of Gaea.

Granted that’s not the law, and in that case, I guess it would be hypocritical, but really, who cares. I mean if you’re willing to back out on your belief and act against it, you might want to question yourself, do you really agree/disagree, or is that just something you say at the dinner table to start conversation or to illuminate your stance on whatever the news channel is syaing at that time?
If it would benefit me, I’d utilize said loopholes. Whether I’m a hypocrite or selfish probably doesn’t matter much, I sure ain’t the only one and besides, if I were to do something like that it would be for something important, at least I like to think so, anyway.

Yes, and I do it anyway. I try to avoid cutting off my nose to spite my face. Like shopping at Walmart, I would love to boycott Walmart on principal but it would only hurt me. I can stick to my principals and pay $200.00 more a week on my standard groceries or I can shop at Walmart save $200.00 week and spend my energy talking shit about Walmart.
