General Question

I seem to have an always stuffy nose. Please help!

Asked by ChocolateReigns (5624points) May 22nd, 2010

My mom thinks blowing my nose is the only way to do anything about it. I keep telling her it doesn’t do anything! All I blow is air. But there seems to be a buildup of some kid of hard stuff in there that gets so bad that I have no choice but to go in the bathroom and pick (yech, I know). Today when I did this, I got a nosebleed. So what should I do? What is this that’s happening?

Your nose might be dry. Have you tried a saline nasal spray?

You might also want to have your mom take you to see your doctor. He/she may want to do some tests to see if you have allergies.

I second the nasal spray. Get a basic saline nasal spray and constantly use it. Taking hot showers also help to relieve congestion. If you think a medicated nasal spray is needed, I would recommend Afrin. Afrin is some sort of miracle drug.

I’d just caution you not to overuse Afrin. It usually has phenylephrine in it, which can actually make the congestion worse if you use it too frequently.

It’s called rhinitis medicamentosa.

You can buy either Ocean or Ayre, OTC saline nasal sprays.

Or you can buy a baby rubber syringe and make your own saline solution. 1 t. salt to 1 c.warm water. Spritz twice in each nostril (do over sink so you can dribble).

There is the old trick of putting a kettle (with a wide spout) of water on stove to low simmer. As steam rises, breathe it in. Be careful not to burn yourself. If you throw a towel over your head, you capture more steam.

I had nasal polyps. Until I had the surgery to have them removed it felt like i had to blow my nose but nothing would come out. Very frustrating.

Some of it could also be nasal inflammation. This would make your nose feel stuffy even though you can’t blow anything out it. I would definitely try the saline nasal spray like the others have recommended. I would also have a doctor check it out as well.

Invest in a Neti Pot (about $11.00). You won’t be sorry

Warning about Neti Pots. If you have narrow eustachian tubes, the concentrated stream of water can be very painful. Unfortunately you don’t discover the width of your eustachian tubes
until you have tried the pot.

I had really severe pain for several hours after trying a Neti. So did my sister.

Allergies? If I were you, I’d be tested. Allergy testing and treatment starting 15 years ago changed my life.

I’m with @jeruba Find out what is cauing the problem. Allergies are really bad this year. Pollen is sky high.

I used a NetiPot like @AmWiser suggested. It was gross but gave some relief. Lots of junk came out, but it was polyp roto-rooter job that really fixed it.
Are your problems seasonal or all the time?

You can also try an OTC decongestant. The one which really works best is Sudafed.

The one out on the shelves is not effective since the formula was changed.

Get the original formula which you’ll need to ask for at the Pharmacy counter.

You don’t need a prescription for it but they will ask you for ID and to sign the log book. But it’s worth cuz it really works.

@worriedguy: You are lucky. My mother had nasal polyps removed on two separate occasions. Both times they grew back. Now she sniffles and goes through a box of Kleenex a week. She also has lost much of her sense of smell.
