Does anyone have VLC for Mac?

Asked by tan235 (877points) June 28th, 2010

I’ve installed VLC as I can’t change my region code anymore.
I downloaded it and installed it but when i put the DVD in and go to menu and press open disc… etc etc and press OK, it doesn’t work… no picture, no sound – nothing!
any ideas?

Thanks

I have vlc for Mac, so hopefully I can help you with this. Let me put in a dvd & see what happens. Be back in a quick moment.

Okay, I am currently watching a retail dvd using vlc on my mac laptop. So there is obviously something going on with your setup.

What is the region of the dvd you are trying to play?
When you insert the dvd, is it showing up on your desktop?
When you choose, File, open disc, what settings are you choosing?

tan235's avatar

hey it’s a netflix DVD not sure of region code, probably american region, when i put it in, it shows up on my computer and the VLC finds it, but once i click OK it doesn’t play, the little blue and white candy spins but then nothing happens… oh when i choose file open disc, i cilck DVD and then press ok….. that works right?

thank so much

Okay, first question.. is this the site you downloaded vlc from?
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Because there are a couple impostor sites out there.

tan235's avatar

ah no didn’t download it there, i downloaded it here : http://vlc-media-player.en.softonic.com/mac

tan235's avatar

but it looks legit right?

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

Umm. Just to be safe, uninstall the current copy you have & install the one from the link I sent…

I installed vlc on a PC recently & got the file from a different site & the copy of vlc installed very strangely.

tan235's avatar

thanks so much will do that now…. will let you know how i go .. totally appreciate it

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

It also makes me nervous that the site you linked to, says the version number is 1.1.0, when the official program site says it’s only on version 1.0.5

tan235's avatar

oh i have mac 10.4.11 could that be why it doesn’t work?

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

From their site…

“Latest Mac OS X package for 10.4 (release 0.9.10)
We strongly recommend to use Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later.
Warning: The following package is not up-to-date with the latest official version of the software. When using an out-of-date version, you may encounter important bugs or security holes. If you wish to use the latest version of the software, you may need to download source code and compile the software manually, or wait for someone else to do it.

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

I think we found the problem. I would still download the 0.9.10 release of the program, (scroll halfway down the page from the link I sent) & give that a go.

tan235's avatar

aha!
ok just stopped download… will re download!

tan235's avatar

ok so i downloaded it but same problem… hmmm is it me?!

i downloaded .9.10 release one….. man i really wanted to watch this dvd but my dvd player is stuck on one region code… apparently this was region free?

tan235's avatar

i just tried a file that was already on my computer and it played that!
so maybe it’s just the DVD? could that be it?
I don’t have another DVD to see if it’s that – unless i’m doing something wrong in the first stages.

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

What is the exact model name/number of your dvd player?
(I may be able to help with that part)

Interesting that VLC isn’t working for you. Is the disc scratched?
Have you tried dragging the dvd icon from the desktop, directly into the vlc window?

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

I will not give up on this until you are sitting comfortably, eating popcorn & enjoying your movie! (unless we troubleshoot every possible thing & still find no answer, then I’m sorry. You’ll have to tell me what movie it is & if I have seen it, I will use this comment section to write out the entire movie, so you can at least say, you read the movie. :)

tan235's avatar

well yeah damn it… it’s mothman…. :) ive seen it before but i’m sure this will happen a lot…. ok so my model is : MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
Firmware Revision: ZB0E

I’m going to try the dragging thing damn it…brb

tan235's avatar

ok no… didn’t work
it’s a bit scratched but not much…. just doesn’t like me.

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

I think there may have been some confusion, possibly. When I asked for the model/name of your dvd player, I was talking about the one that would be in your living room, hooked to the TV, not the one built in on your computer. Am I right in this assumption?

tan235's avatar

ha ha .... nooo on my computer! on my macbook… ah life .. so that does change everything now, are we no longer dating!

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

Well, it’s an open relationship as of now.. I need to be with someone with a working dvd player, what can I say.. I like them fancy folk with working’ dvd playahs.

tan235's avatar

ha ha… ah i guess i’m not going to be watching mothman prophecies… damn it .. i’ll try another DVD if that doesn’t work then i’ll stream something .. just so you know .. hey thanks so much though for all your help it was fun!

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

I’m a little confused, (did you slip something in my drink?) you said in your question “can’t change my region code anymore” what did you mean by this?

tan235's avatar

ohhh, my region code on my mac… you know how you only have a certain number of times before it locks?
well mine is now LOCKED!
damn stupid hollywood… apparently they are to blame, i’d never slip anything in your drink – I wouldn’t know where to buy that kind of stuff in the first place!
but yeah region code on computer…. does that make sense?

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

What region is it locked in?

tan235's avatar

not sure… how do you know?
either australian or american region…. 2 or 4?

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

Yup, thats not American. Here is a map for future reference.

Okay, next question.. just how ethical do we want to keep this?? I have another method, which isn’t entirely illlegal, but may get the job done.

tan235's avatar

well i looked at that method first but then one of the links wasn’t working… can we be unethical on a forum… anyway whoopsy crossed that boundary… i did download two out of 3 things…. does that sound like what you were going to suggest?
I’m happy to try anything….

tan235's avatar

brb .. just need to get some pop corn, seriously you mentioned pop corn and now i need to get some… 2 secs

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

My suggestion, is to download a program called, Mac The Ripper. It might be able to bypass your dvd drive’s region code & then you can rip the movie & copy it to your desktop (choosing which region you want before you rip the movie—you need to choose 2 or 4) & then drag the disk image you created onto VLC. Hopefully that will work. If it doesn’t, I’m sorry that it was such a waste of time. If it does work… you are indebted to me eternally. :)

I’m searching through some sites that may have another way/answer… I’ll post what I find, will take just a second.

tan235's avatar

awesome!
thank you so much… if it works then yep, i’ll answer any of your question with as much ghusto and speed as i can muster, I’ll clean your car and mow your lawns for you. it’s so annoying that they do that – make region codes…. grrrrrrrr , i have heard of this Mac the Ripper program so will try it, i’ve now settled on La Femme Nikita… netflix gotta love it… it’s a great way to procrastinate – which i’ve been doing all day – thanks again so much for helping me!!

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

Okay, since I have never changed the region code on my macbook (I’m a good little boy), I have no clue how to do what I am about to tell you to possibly do, but I get the feeling this is what you have done already. (seriously, I have no clue what any of this stuff is, but if it does what it says it does.. we will have success)

Download one or both of these files.
http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=category&id=1847

Using that program…

Download one or both of these files.
http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=category&id=1849

import one of those files using the program (maybe, really, I have no clue what I am saying) & hopefully it will reset your dvd drive region code back to region 1.

tan235's avatar

yeah that! ok will try it again…. perfect… thanks.. fingers crossed, apparently apple can do it but you have to pay them… of course… nothing is free in this world .. well apart from free ware but who knows where that’s been.

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

Well, it looks like we have come to the end of our adventure. Please, write back to let me know if you figured it all out & how/if you got it to work. Best of luck & stay out of trouble with the MPAA.
