There are people who do heroic things every day, but since they don’t toot their own horns we don’t always know about it. They are the people who act on behalf of the oppressed. They are the people who fight our wars for us. They are the people who step in to stop a bully.

My office window overlooks a busy intersection. Recently I saw a young woman get off the bus at the corner with a wiggly little boy and a sheaf of papers. The wind caught her papers and blew them everywhere. She was trying to keep hold of the boy and gather her papers at the same time. Two cars stopped. One driver, a woman, redirected traffic while the other, a man in a business suit chased the papers all over the street and returned them to the young woman. Not a big deal perhaps, but it went beyond kindness. I thought the people acted heroically. Lives weren’t at stake, but they did was was needed and what was right.

I have to say that I am feeling pretty good about Obama these days, and what he is taking on for us and our country.

I don’t think the days of heroes are over, I guess it’s kind of sad that one doesn’t pop immediately into mind, but there has also been a kind of “hero inflation” at work in the past few decades. It’s seems that it takes a lot less than it used to in order to be declared a hero. I’ll have to think on it.
