If you could ship out (to jellies) one food item from your area, what would it be?

Asked by Jude (32198points) June 2nd, 2011

Right now, I’d shipped some crumpets to my neighbors to the South.
Toasted with melted butter and honey/yummy goodness.

Brits/Commonwealth countries know what I’m talking about.
They are sold there, as well. Not in the U.S., though.

I am munching on some right now. :)

Wedding Soup.
I had a cup of it for lunch today with a caesar salad wrap and it was amazing. I still can’t believe that it is considered a regional thing.

Home made apple butter.

Or alternatively, fire and ice pickles

Eiether Autocraft coffee milk syrup or Dells Lemonade, both great products made in Rhode Island

Freebirds Burritos!

My particular favorite is a regular chicken on a spinach tortilla with rice, black beans, mixed cheese, roasted veggies, pico de gillo, a bit of roasted garlic, red onion, and lettuce. And, of course, don’t forget the habanero sauce on the side.

I’d send everyone some deelishus, rib ticklin, finger lickin Texas BBQ!

I’d say chocolate, but that’s not exactly “from this area”. ;)

Apparently the D.C. area has only two foods that were invented here: the half smoke and the salty oat cookie. A half smoke is sort of like a bratwurst. Actually, I really can’t tell the difference between a half smoke and a bratwurst at all… maybe it has a bit of a hot dog flavor to it. If it’s done well with a nice char and crispy skin, it’s great.

Ben’s Chili Bowl (Obama visited there during his campaign) does half smokes with chili and stays open late, and it’s a historical site, I think. Mostly, that place reminds me of greasy, late-night eats after way too many drinks on U Street, then indigestion on the way home. One of my friends says that chili half-smokes give her the bubble guts. Uhh, thanks. But those chili dogs hit the spot.

The salty oat cookie is just what it sounds like: an oatmeal raisin cookie with salt on it. It’s made with less sugar in the dough and tastes kind of biscuity or a bit like a scone. They’re usually kind of dry, but they go ok with tea.

The downtown is also known for really shady food carts selling dry jumbo pretzels and questionable hotdogs to hapless tourists on the mall. We also have jumbo slice, which is a slice of pizza the size of a regular pizza, which flops over if you try to hold it up by the crust on the end. The texture of the pizza is somewhere between mushy and flaccid. The cheese is orange and rubbery, and if you fold the pizza all this bright orange grease comes dripping off.

The suburbs are full of great ethnic eats, especially Vietnamese food in Falls Church and Korean food in Annandale. The Vietnamese center is called Eden for a reason- yum!

So I guess if I’d ship anything out, it would be Vietnamese duck porridge with warm duck salad. The porridge is made with soft rice in a rich and savory white broth made of duck fat. They float slices of raw ginger, thai basil, and cilantro on the top as a garnish. Duck salad is pieces of roasted bone-in duck, served warm on a bed of crispy dried onions, raw onions, shredded cabbage, sour pickled radish and carrot, thai basil, cilantro, and some type of crunchy little bits. Not sure what those are. You dip it all in a sauce made of lime juice, fish sauce, vinegar, and red chili flakes. The meal is pretty cheap, maybe $10 for both together, and the way the flavors and textures contrast together is just amazing. It’s a symphony of deliciousness in your mouth.

All in all, DC sucks at food if the best thing here is a dish from another country. I don’t think we really have any regional food here.

Since I’m in Germany right now, I’d ship out some nice German beer. Cheers!

Depending on the season.
Spring: walleye, fresh morel mushrooms, asparagus.
Summer: Catfish, walleye, mulberry jelly
Fall: Pheasant, deer, duck, goose, plum jam. If I get lucky and get a tag, paddlefish caviar.
Winter: squirrel, cottontail, perch and bluegill.

All free range or wild caught.

Jude's avatar

@WasCy shit around here?

wundayatta's avatar

Cheesesteak?
Scrapple?
Surely we have something a bit less fatty? But I will say you haven’t had a cheesesteak until you’ve had a Philly Cheesesteak.

Pizza. Pure thin crusted pizza from Brooklyn. Manhattan is okay, I guess, but Brooklyn is where it’s at.
Oh, and red velvet donuts from Peter Pan bakery.

Haleth's avatar

@Michael_Huntington Red velvet donuts? Holy crap, that sounds amazing!

Michael_Huntington's avatar

@Haleth Yeah, they are pretty awesome. Also, they’re like 60 cents for each.

creative1's avatar

@Michael_Huntington I think I will have to make a trip to get a donut, those actually make me want on though I haven’t had a donut in years

fundevogel's avatar

I don’t know what regional dish I’d ship from here, since all of the stuff I can think of came to California from somewhere else. But goddammit it I wish I could get some real pit barbeque here.

fundevogel's avatar

If I was still in Florida it would be fried catfish. So good.

Stinley's avatar

Potato scones are the best thing in Scotland. You can leave all that haggis to the traditionalists, tattie scones are the future.

There’s always the classic dessert, after your fish supper – deep fried battered Mars Bar. You know – like tempura, but with chocolate
