When someone cuts in line at the gas pump, what is YOUR response?

Asked by gottamakeart (1323points) July 24th, 2011

My neighbor was just telling me how he was cut off in line after waiting patiently at the gas pump for about ten minutes. The person who got out of the car was a very young pregnant woman who shouted “I’m pregnant and just want to get home” she added an extended middle-finger to her already rude act. This gesture remained the whole time she was pumping her gas. My neighbor was STILL upset hours later- as not only was he treated to such rudeness, he also did not know how to respond.

I said I wasn’t sure if there WAS any way to respond to that. I also added that pregnancy hormones- and ( at the time of this writing we’re experiencing a heat wave), were also things to be considered other than just a lousy personality.

I tend to find this kind of thing completely hilarious. Even if I’m in a hurry, a ludicrous display like that always makes me chuckle. The fact that she was pregnant makes it extra sweet.

Getting mad only hurts you in that situation. Gets your blood pressure up, tempts you to respond in a way that’s more on the level of said pregnant A-hole. To her it would only serve to justify the salute. Laughing makes you feel better and them feel stupid.

“When you give birth to your sprog I’m going to be there with a hired female wrestler to cave your head in, you stupid fucking filling up the highway with another idiot kid bitch”

EDIT: “I can’t wait ‘till you give birth so the doctor can say: oh look, there is a cunt coming out of a cunt’s cunt… you cunt!”

I would just sulk. Fuck that noise, he/she might be a wizard or something.

My thoughts are ‘frikking idiot’. Then I just wait patiently for my turn. I’m a patient person and detest confrontation and I definately don’t want some idiot hitting my car.

It gives pregnant women a bad name. All you can do is shrug and hope that she gets hers at a later time.

I always try to give myself a lot of time when doing errands to make room for the crazies of the world. They are multiplying – as proof above.

I love your answer @atomicmonkey. I also chuckle at all the people who are in such a hurry that they forget their manners. I’ve learned to slow down and enjoy the ride. Stressing over a lost minute here and there is not worth it.

I drive a lot so people are always cutting me off in traffic, tailgaiting (my least favorite because it seems like the most dangerous) flashing lights at me or just simply driving wrecklessly. Thank goodness I don’t suffer from road rage, I’m very patient and I try to anticipate what the douchebags are going to do and I move away from them and stay out of their way. I’ve had people jump in front of me in line at the gas station and even though it bums me out, I just let them cut in. I’m with @YARNLADY I try to give myself more than enough time to do my errands so that the delay won’t cause me any problems. I often let people go ahead of me at the grocery store too, because it just doesn’t matter and it’s not worth the hassle or angry words.

I honestly don’t know what I would have done in this situation. That woman sounds like a horrible person, who will probably be a horrible mother and create another horrible child. If I was really upset, which is pretty rare for me, I might have gone inside the station, told the attendant what the lady did and demanded that he stop her pump and come outside and make her move.

I did see something awesome one time, though. Someone cut in front of the person that was ahead of me. Everybody else in line saw this douchebag pull this stunt and everybody was giving him dirty looks, but the prize went to the guy in front of him, who backed his giant truck up in such a way that the douchebag couldn’t get out of the station when he was finished pumping his gas. That was pretty cool.

Id probably block them in with my car then go inside the store for an obnoxiously long time :) perhaps to buy condoms….

After thinking about this, I’m kind of confused about how it could happen if you’re directly behind the car in front of you, and you’re not moving, how someone could come and get in front of you? I can see if you’re driving on a road (highway, whatever) and someone cuts you off, but if you’re not moving, how does that happen?

@jca This is usually what happens. You’re sitting there behind the car in front of you that is currently at the pump. But because there is traffic coming into the station from 2 sides (on a corner lot) you have to leave enough room for the other cars that are leaving (usually having to back up to get out) to have enough room to leave (otherwise you’d be blocking them in). So then, as soon as the guy in front of you pulls away, if there is someone else trying to get out, going the other direction, or someone walking across the path, some douche like this lady will come from the end of the line, passing you on your right, not giving a hoot about the fact that other people are coming and going and they just jump into that spot. The only reason that me, or the other polite people don’t immediately go into the spot, is because we are looking out for out-going traffic and pedestrians, the douchey lady was not.

I’ve also seen people pull up next to the person who is currently at the pump, and then quickly back into the spot, even though there’s a whole line of cars behind the person who was at the pump waiting patiently to get in.

This has happened to me more than once : (
