Are newbies welcome?

Asked by Aspire (398points) September 11th, 2011

As you can see, I am new, I joined today. I must admit that I have been ‘stalking’ Fluther for a while now, and I have decided that it looks an interesting place to live.

Is it ok if I join?

Why wouldn’t it?

Welcome to fluther. Listen, learn, contribute, read the guidelines and prepare to give up friends, hobbies, chores, and socializing, though.

PhiNotPi's avatar

You have already joined.

Sunny2's avatar

Of course. Welcome!

Aspire's avatar

@gailcalled Thank you, I’ll do my best to fit in.

Judi's avatar

Newbies are always welcome. It only gets frustrating when they don’t respect the guidelines. Its a great group of jellies and if you are smart, open minded, and have something to contribute, it’s a great place to hang out.

ucme's avatar

So long as they’ve paid their membership fee like the rest of us, then yeah, welcome! ;¬}

marinelife's avatar

Welcome to Fluther. It is good that you have been lurking for a while. Be sure and read the Guidelines before you get too into it.

Aspire's avatar

Thank you all, I appreciate your time to answer me, I think I am already addicted.

Coloma's avatar

Welcome…we “Aspire” to make your stay comfortable, put yer feet up and stay awhile. :-)

Earthgirl's avatar

You are every welcome here! Don’t worry so much about “fitting in”, just be yourself and as long as you are polite and respect the guidelines you will feel very at home and find something that you can contribute. There is a very wide variety of opinions expressed and also a lot of joking around and general fun and teasing.
Part of the fun part for me is seeing people’s personlities emerge through their words. I love it .

Welcome to Fluther. :)

Welcome to Fluther!
You will find we are an amazing source of information, and a bit of humor.
Sit down, dive in, and forget about any spare time you thought you might have in the future.
This is Fluther. We own your life, now!

Newbies are always welcome. I love learning from new people and finding out their point of views.

Welcome :-)

FutureMemory's avatar

@zensky Wellllll…..if someone didn’t create a new account every 3 months we’d be fine!

Coloma's avatar

That @zensky, he’s a real Rascal he is. ;-P

zensky's avatar

Yeah, I take up so much space. Anyway – the n00b knows I am kidding because I Pmed the kid.

FutureMemory's avatar

You know I’m kiddin’ too, I hope. <big manly kiss>

Berserker's avatar

Course newbies are welcome. Sometimes you might find it a bit strict and rough, but we’re all fair and good people. Hope you enjoy it and stick around. :)

Mariah's avatar

Please do join in! I think the only problem you’ll face with being new is that it can take a little while to settle into the “fluther vibe” (this site is quite different from most of the internet), but it’s always great to get new people. Welcome aboard. :)

Coloma's avatar

Look at it this way, without new blood in the Fluther, sooner or later we’d end up inbreds.
Mutant Jellies just recycling the same old plankton. lol

Lightlyseared's avatar

Newbies are always welcome.

Hibernate's avatar

Everyone is welcomed as long as they stick to the “rules”. ^^

Welcome.

thebluewaffle's avatar

Everyone was a ‘newbie’ once. Just fucking take over.

Blueroses's avatar

Yay! Fresh meat!

Of course you’re welcome in the flutherverse.

Coloma's avatar

@thebluewaffle

I see you have leadership qualities. lol

tinyfaery's avatar

Come on in. Coffee and pastries to the right and booze to the right.

zensky's avatar

@Blueroses I still think of you as fresh meat. Just saying.

Kardamom's avatar

We definitely welcome newbies. Pleased to meet you @Aspire! Please stick around.

As long as you follow the guidelines and try to write clearly (don’t use text speak, try to use proper English and use separate paragraphs when you write long posts so it’s easier to read, and try to put as much concise detail into your questions and replies, so we don’t have to guess what you mean) you’ll do just fine.

Don’t forget that you are, in fact, online. Because statements can have different meanings when you can’t hear the tone of a person’s voice or see their body language, you should be conscious of what you write (and think about how it might come across to someone else) before you post. You should not have to change the way you are, or what you think, but just try be polite and respectful and understand that there are lots of different viewpoints on this site.

If you read something that really upsets you, don’t react immediately. Take a minute to decide how you want to handle a post by another member that seems really wrong or inappropriate to you. You have lots of options. You can always ignore people that you don’t like. You can also flag any question or posting. You can also contact @augustlan (our community manager) with a private message. She can help you solve just about any problem that you might encounter. You can also send private messages to other members if you just want to vent a little bit or get more information. Or you can post a reply right on the question letting the other person know what you think, but always try to be polite and respectful and follow the guidelines.

Fluther is an amazing site. It really is different than anything else I’ve encountered online. You can get answers to your questions almost instantly and most of the people on this site are actually trying to be useful and helpful, although there are some folks that simply like to get attention or want to be silly and funny (just like in real life). There is plenty of room for both light and serious topics. Everybody on this site has a whole lifetime of disparate experiences, so even if you have a really unusual question, there is likely to be someone on here that can help you get the information you need, even if they have to refer you to another member or another website.

If you like to eat, the folks on Fluther can help you find a snack, plan a dinner party or throw a wedding for 500 guests or put together a family reunion on a budget or figure out how to change your diet if you become a vegetarian, need to lose weight, or find out that you have celiac disease or diabetes.

Fluther can help to feed your stomach, your heart and your soul. Stick around, see if I’m wrong : )

Seriously, Welcme to Fluther. Being new to Fluther is still fresh in my mind, and I survived. Trust me you can too. Just remember no one here can hurt you.

Did you bring cookies?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Sure new brains are always welcome at the barbecue.Symbeline didn’t say it.

Hibernate's avatar

And some milk with those cookies, or maybe a tea.

filmfann's avatar

Welcome to Fluther.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Now we’re watching you. And judging. And stalking. are you scared, yet? I’m trying to develop my intimidation skills to counter my “Mommy” image.
Welcome aboard, well, over board @Aspire ! Have some fun, here. Bring us food, give us treats, we’ll be docile…

gailcalled's avatar

@Aspire; The first rule is “trust no one,” particularly that toothy Jill. Docile, my foot.

But we’re glad to have you with us.

CWOTUS's avatar

Docile, hell.

Kardamom's avatar

Where did she go? I hope we haven’t scared her off already. I was hoping that she might have the ultimate, awesomely tasty recipe of a lifetime. Catch her!!!

PhiNotPi's avatar

Once a jelly, always a jelly. Even when you leave Fluther, Fluther will never leave you.

You are officially a Flutherite for life.

Berserker's avatar

You can take the tiger out of the jungle, but you can’t take the jungle out of the tiger!

Bill Watterson rules. I bet he’d love it here.

downtide's avatar

Steady now, @PhiNotPi, you’ll scare the newbie away talking like that…

Aspire's avatar

I’m still here. I’m even Fluthering at work right now!

gailcalled's avatar

@Aspire: Unfortunately (or unfortunately, as the case may be) you have accelerated your learning curve; here less than a week and you already need rehab.

Aspire's avatar

I know! I wasn’t alone yesterday so I couldn’t log on, but the minute my colleague left, here I am.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Less than a week might be a record for fluther addiction. I think I made it to a month before I was hooked.

FutureMemory's avatar

I’m pretty sure I was addicted after the first night.
