Are you talented at anything crafty or artistic, and if so, how did you learn it and get into it?

Asked by jca (36062points) October 1st, 2015

Do you have any special craft or artistic skill that you are good at? Anything at all from welding to sewing to anything in between. How did you learn it? Please feel free to post photos if you can.

I ask because something similar was asked on a FB group page, and there were so many diverse talents discussed. One lady made leather jewelry from belts, for example. The post showed an incredible array of hobbies – beautiful, inspiring, diverse talents and products shown.

Yes, and practice.
And I made this recently

@ragingloli Nice work. But have you considered the sharp edge hazard at the end of the handrail? I would tip it with a 20cm diam., orange Nerf ball so young children do not knock out one of their eyes.

why bother with child safety features when they are going to get drowned in the pool anyway?

@ragingloli That makes sense. In the US 3 times as many children drown in swimming pools (~5000) than gun violence (~1400). I agree. The Nerf ball would only detract from the clean aesthetics.

As to the original question, I have been making nozzles that fit over garden hoses to spray a precisely controlled amount of water into ponds to make up for evaporation and seepage. I go from about 2 liters/hour, 0.5 gallons/hr, up to ~100 liters/hour, ~25 gallons/hour (for a quicker, slow fill) in several steps. It works great.

I had a need for my pond and experimented with various micro drill sizes and materials. I eventually found a combination that works nicely and allows a range of flows with the same process.

A couple years ago my wife gave me a gift certificate for any class at a local art studio. My dad was a talented watercolor painter so I thought I’d give that a try but they did not offer any evening painting classes. I had a friend who was a gifted potter and saw they offered evening ceramics classes and signed up for the beginner series and instantly fell in love with playing with clay.

@ragingloli I didn’t see a chalk outline of a body on the kitchen floor so I assume they survived?”

I got all my theatre talents by osmosis. I started by volunteering on production crews doing things like sweeping the stage, pulling curtains, and running the sound board and eventually started creating sound effects and selecting preshow and intermission music. Ten years later, I started acting and directing, and I’ve done that for five years or so. None of that was a grand ambition—people asked me to help, so I did. This is all community theatre, btw.

The “heat” in the mix is in each production schedule. Everything leads up to a deadline, so you are forced to figure it out. I also had a lot of trained and (more or less) seasoned people advising me along the way.

Yes, knitting. I found some how-to instructions and taught myself. I can follow any advanced-level pattern, and I often create my own designs.

I enjoy knitting because it’s relaxing; I’ve known people who knit to distract themselves from bad habits, such as smoking, snacking, drinking alcohol, etc. Also, the results are very practical and useful.

I ampretty talented in interior design and decorating, it’s in my genes as my father was an Architect.
I also draw fairly well and love landscaping too. Nobody taught me, I am one of those self taught types, if something sparks my interest I learn everything I can about it on my own and then apply trial and error, hands on, learning. My daughter is the same way, a talented, self taught painter.

I also love sculpting but haven’t played with the clay for a few years now and have a passion for creating water gardens too.

Watercolor painting. I’ve been taking lessons with various teachers off and on – more off than on – for many years.

Pretty much whatever I feel like learning. You just dive in and do it. Somethings are easier than others.

I love drawing! I’ve been doing it my whole life. I’m self-taught but I look at references online and I’ve just improved over time. I finished this one last night!: http://kungrea.deviantart.com/art/Lapis-Lazuli-563525718
Other recent ones I’m proud of are these: http://kungrea.deviantart.com/art/Mikolaj-547341438 http://kungrea.deviantart.com/art/Baileeey-544545374 http://kungrea.deviantart.com/art/Jade-Pouting-541582741

I’m pretty crafty and artistic. No classes or anything, drawing always came pretty naturally to me compared to the average person. My grandma and my mom can draw, so I think that’s where I got it. If I really applied myself, I think I could be much better. Someone asked a question on here about whether or not any Jellies wanted to share their art and some of us did. (http://www.fluther.com/180497/do-you-have-any-photos-drawings-or-scribbles-youd-like-to/)

I make Christmas ornaments every year that are all over the place, I fix up ugly furniture and make it nicer, I make beads, I take pictures, I tried my hand and 3D rendering, etc.

Screw it, a lot of it (but not all of it) is on my instagram if anyone wants to look: https://instagram.com/walkingemphasis/

@DrasticDreamer Your gravitation towards the arts is undeniable…your passion for the arts is exemplified in all your pictures that you chose so carefully to share here. Keep being honest with your art and do keep on sharing knowing there are people out there that share your passion and desire to connect with those who appreciate one for who they are and not just what they create.

@Cruiser Thank you. And yes, definitely. It’s what I’ve always been the most drawn to. I wanted to be an artist growing up and some part of me still wishes that I could just drop everything and do nothing but create, create, create. There are so many things I’ve wanted to do artistically (glass making, pottery, jewelry, etc.)... I really wish I could just dive in.
