What do you think about Obama calling Kanye West a jackass?

Asked by kheredia (5566points) September 16th, 2009

I must say when I heard about this it really put a smile on my face. I think he, like everybody else is entitled to an opinion. Plus, it’s not like he said it on National television. He was just having a casual conversation about this and expressed his opinion.

He was expressing his personal opinion in private, and was overheard. It’s no one’s business what he says privately, but I must say it was amusing.

Sarcasm's avatar

I’m all for our president calling a duck a duck.

It’s annoying, though, that something said off-the-record gets printed.

robmandu's avatar

I was surprised to learn he was watching the VMA’s. I didn’t think anyone caught that live… just in reblogs.

eponymoushipster's avatar

I’d say he got it spot on.

Les's avatar

Not cool that something said off record was suddenly put ‘on record’ by the wonderful folks in our media, but what he said was cool, and not anything we didn’t already know.

jrpowell's avatar

I guess he hates black people too.

MrMeltedCrayon's avatar

Well, Kanye West is a jackass, so I’m all for it.

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

He’s just telling the truth
If we had mccain and if you asked him, he’d be like “whos that lol” and not be fun at all

Allie's avatar

He’s human. He’s allowed to have (and voice) opinions. It made me like him more, too. =]

ragingloli's avatar

if he’d only been so clear during the speech before congress.

dalepetrie's avatar

I’m dumbfounded that we now have a President capable of speaking the truth.

tinyfaery's avatar

He’s a great judge of behavior.

Disc2021's avatar

Well said Mr. President.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Oh, I saw the little clip on Gawker today of that remark! I thought it was funny, especially right after, when some woman says, “That’s what Pink said! Hahahaha!”

SheWasAll_'s avatar

It. Was. Excellent. But unfortunately nothing in these technology-filled days is “off the record.”

Dr_C's avatar

The man has a right to an opinion… it was off the record and he shoudl also have a right to privacy… it made me like him more. He was right on.

BBSDTfamily's avatar

Congrats Pres. Obama, you’ve done almost a handful of things I agree with now.

charliecompany34's avatar

the comment wasn’t supposed to get out, but thanks to technology, it did. the comment? “spot on.” i mean, honestly—kanye’s behavior was very “jack-ass-esque.”

might even mean the end of his career for a while. he’ll need to go into hibernation or start singing gospel music to redeem himself.

mponochie's avatar

Again not of the common fluther mind but I found it as tackless as Kanye’s actions.

BBSDTfamily's avatar

@mponochie Expressing disgust at someone actions (the president is a real person with real emotions too, ya know) and actually going on stage and stealing someone’s big moment is in no way “as tackless” as one another. And it’s “tactless”

deni's avatar

I’m not into politics and obamarama but it’s nice to see that the president can have emotions/feelings about things other than politics.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

Kanye West albums will likely see a surge in sales due to new radically conservative listeners.

Buttonstc's avatar

It’s refreshing to see a politician not afraid to “call a spade a spade” so to speak.

Kanye succeeded in thoroughly embarrassing himself so why shouldn’t a President be allowed to state the obvious? Good for him !

avvooooooo's avatar

I think it was perfect!

jca's avatar

by the way it was not the first time something said in private by a politician was overheard and made public.

i am glad he said it because hopefully Kanye West will really get the point that maybe he should get some therapy or something.

Supacase's avatar

What? This is the first time a president’s off-record comments were reported? I’m thinking something about Bush and an asshole NY Times reporter… something else about Bush and Tony Blair…

Anyway, I think it was awesome.

boffin's avatar

First thing that our lord and savior the Big “O” has said that I have agreed with…

ragingloli's avatar

@boffin
so you believe that the current healthcare situation is perfect, that there is no economic crisis, that torture is good, that there will be death panels, that you will be forced to have abortions, that there should be no two state solution in Gaza, etc?

SeventhSense's avatar

He speaks the truth.
What is interesting is the almost complete transparency which is becoming the norm with our elected officials. Interesting to see how this kind of stuff will play out. I doubt it will cause any major changes in personality but maybe we can get our elected leaders out of the spotlight and into the office where they belong. Who cares what dog is in the white house or if our elected leaders wear boxers or briefs. We make such nonsense news when the country should have some dignity. It’s embarrassing.

Sarcasm's avatar

Regardless of his policies, he seems to be a cool guy to be around.

breedmitch's avatar

I think it’s telling that the interviewer framed it in the context of Kanye givving Taylor “the Joe Wilson treatment”. It was almost like it allowed the President to finally comment on the Congressman’s outburst, but in a nonchalant way.
Very Jed Bartlett, a la West Wing. It makes me think he knew exctly what he was doing.

Dr_C's avatar

@breedmitch i swear to god if there was a Jed Bartlett like figure out there i would vote for him at the drop of a hat… and would most likely get many many many people to do the same. (I friggin’ LOVED the West Wing).

knitfroggy's avatar

I think he was right…Kanya West is a Jackass!

dannyc's avatar

Kanye who?

airowDee's avatar

It reminds me the incident when Obama was accused of giving a middle finger to Hillary Clinton during the primary and now I believe that he really did do that on purpose.

For reference : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DygBj4Zw6No

airowDee's avatar

I wonder if he said that on purpose as a leak to show the young ones how cool and down to earth he is.

ragingloli's avatar

@airowDee
he clearly uses both the middle AND the index finger

OpryLeigh's avatar

I loved it! I don’t know what he is like the majority of the time, I live in England and only see bits and pieces of him on the news etc, but in that moment he seemed extremely down to earth. Something as small as that probably shouldn’t make me respect a person but I did respect the president for that. It wasn’t false, he wasn’t deliberately trying to be diplomatic (which so many politicians do whenever they are asked a question) he just answered a question. I wish all politicians were that straight to the point and honest at times.

cwilbur's avatar

I think Kanye West is an asshole, and I’m pleased that the President recognizes this.

What I want to know is why anyone started paying any attention to Kanye West in the first place.

Sarcasm's avatar

Yeah, @airowDee, you can see the index finger as he’s bringing his hand down.

irocktheworld's avatar

I thought it was really funny honestly.:P
When I heard about it,I was like “Seriously?” I was kinda shocked by this because Ive neve heard a president cuss before but Kanye West deserved that! He is a jackass and he knows it! Nobody should have done that to Tayloir Swift!! I love her and shes amazing! I dont like Kanye West anymore…..

dalepetrie's avatar

@irocktheworld – Seriously, you’ve never heard a President swear before? Not when Bush called the NYT reporter a “major league asshole”? Not the infamous Nixon tapes?

aprilsimnel's avatar

I think @irocktheworld may be under 21, @dalepetrie. Am I right, @irocktheworld?

jca's avatar

i hope kanye west is hanging his head in shame.

ragingloli's avatar

@irocktheworld
i hope kanye west is hanging his head in shame.
i hope kanye west is hanging his head
i hope kanye west is hanging.

tinyfaery's avatar

@ragingloli Maybe not a good thing to reference hanging when talking about black men. It’s a bit questionable.

ragingloli's avatar

@tinyfaery
it is a common game on the internet to reduce sentences until they say something else.

Sarcasm's avatar

No white people were ever hung.
FACT!
wait

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Sarcasm Apparently not

cwilbur's avatar

@Sarcasm: It’s probably wise, in this context, to distinguish between hanged and hung. Only one is a form of execution.

Noel_S_Leitmotiv's avatar

I’ve known some hung black men.

Never met any that were hanged..

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv i bet you like your black men hung.

I wanna go two steppin’,
With a good lookin’ big black buck,
I want him to come and pick me up in his chevrolet pick-up truck,
And when we’re on the dance floor his hat will rise high above,
It’s inter-racial cowboy homo kind of love.

Tall of course dark and handsome,
A gentlemen in every way,
A true cow poke in every sense of the word,
We really go to work in the hay.

A bronc bustin’ bull ridin’ tiger,
Yet peaceful as a dove,
It’s inter-racial cowboy homo kind of love,

I know that us as a couple,
Will cause talk but I wouldn’t mind,
Those cowboys will be pea green with envy,
When they see his cute behind.

That’s why each night by the campfire,
I thank my lucky stars above,
For inter-racial cowboy homo kind of love.
