What is your ideal weight?

Asked by live_rose (1223points) October 23rd, 2009

Sure you could go by a bmi chart that tells you your ideal weight range but I think as a whole people have a precise view of what their weight should be/ needs to stay, and that view has little or nothing to do with bmi. Like personally I’m 5“5 and I currently weigh 157 lbs, my ideal/goal weight is around 130 I think, not because it’s healthy (it is) but because I think I’d look good at that weight. I’m just curious to see what other people think their weight should be. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so Im interested in seeing how people’s images of physical self beauty differ.

I think i look good no matter what, and i am about 161cm and i weigh 58 kgs. I am curvy and im loving it !! I am at my own ideal weight !!

Ideal weight should be based on body composition, not some stupid chart based on height and nothing else of importance. If you can get that calculated and figure your body fat percentage from there, you can get your true ideal weight. Mine is in the 140s.

I’d have to cut off my leg to get to my “ideal weight” based on BMI (102) and if I got down to my “top weight” (128), I’d have a lower body fat percentage than those scary female bodybuilders and Olympic gymnasts. When they figured me up, I was 122 pounds of muscle, organ, and bone (non-fat) even though I’m only 5 feet tall. There’s more to the weight you should be at than simply how tall you are (or aren’t)

People will constantly tell me what my ideal weight should be, but I’m 5’5”-5’6” and I weigh around 117–120 or so and I’m fine with it. I’ve always been skinny; always. Just a couple years ago I was under 110. In middle school and early freshman year I was in the double-digits. Sure, it’s on the lower end of “normal” weight, but I don’t have much desire to change. I eat plenty, I exercise, and this is what happens; I do not view it as a bad thing.

My mom is 5’3”, my sister is 5’4”. I feel big around my family and then I walk out into reality… :P

3.5 grams. No, I’m kidding. I’m not sure what my ideal weight is. Maybe somewhere around 150ish. I’m tall. Like, 5’ 9’’ tall.

deni's avatar

I’m 5’3” and around 130 but my weight fluctuates like crazy and I don’t know why….I could drop a few pounds though. My legs are so short.

2late2be's avatar

I’m 5’5” and I weight 160 at the moment, I want to be somewhere between 135–145..

BMI is a horrible gauge. All it factors in is your weight and your height.

A 6 foot tall disgusting slob who eats pizza every day, and a 6 foot tall bodybuilder could have the exact same BMI, yet are not similar at all.

I wouldn’t mind weighing 160 pounds.

jrpowell's avatar

I’m a little shy of 6’ and 140 pounds. I want to be about 160. But I have a really hard time gaining weight.

cookieman's avatar

I’m about 6’0” and 260lbs.
I’m comfortable at 200lbs.
BMI tells me I should be around 165lbs.
I haven’t been 165lbs. since 7th grade – not much chance of that happening.

poisonedantidote's avatar

102 kilos, its my view that the charts are the best way of ariving at it. convert your height to centimeters, and remove 100 of them, call whats left kilos and thats your ideal weight.

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

I’m about 180cm, and weigh 57kg. About two years back I managed to get over 60kg, but it didn’t last. My ideal weight is 65kg, but I don’t see myself getting there any time soon. For now, I’m just trying to get over 60kg again.

I’m 5’6” or so &right now weigh app. 134. Before menopause hit, I weighed app. 138 & felt fine. Now, however, all the excess is right around the middle instead of evenly distributed. I would like to get rid of about 10 lb but will probably settle for 5 or so. (I should probably insert here that I weighed around 125 for most of my adult life; I’m not trying to get unhealthily skinny.)

Jayne's avatar

I’m 5’9” and 150 lbs. I could stand to gain a bit of weight, so long as it’s muscle, but I’m fine as I am.

I am 184cm/76kg (6’/168lbs) and reasonably happy with my weight though I could probably use another few pounds. If I can get back to 175 I’ll be very happy.

Weight is a funny thing with women in my family though – mostly my wife – and a couple of my daughters. They all like to be able to swap clothes and panic if one of them can’t into the others’ clothing. My wife is 160cm/49kg (5’3/110lb) which only 5lbs heavier than her weight at nineteen (when I met her) but she is stressing about “toning up” lately. She is on an exercise binge. She found an old pair of jeans that she had in the eighties and they were tight when she tried them on – she freaked. (I think that they have shrunk).

casheroo's avatar

My ideal weight is between 112–115. I’m 5’6.
I’m currently 129lbs, but I’m also 5½ months pregnant.

Ugh, damn BMI.. one of the stupidest things ever, IMO. It doesn’t take into account frame size, which is really important when determining whether someone is overweight or not. The military has it right – they measure your wrist to get an idea of your frame size and they have different min/max weights for different frames.

I’m 5’6” and have a medium-large frame, and you would never guess my weight in a million years because of it. I tend to carry my weight in the middle, but have muscle in my non-fat areas, especially my legs, which have almost no fat. Anyway, I’d be happy at 155, but I think I’d look and feel really good at 145.

trogdor_87's avatar

I’m 6’ 4” and 288lb, as far as my ideal weight should be, I should probably be 250 or so. But I would be happy at 260–270.

Facade's avatar

I don’t care how much I weigh. I care about inches and how everything looks. Technically I’m overweight according to the BMI chart but those people can go fuck themselves.

aprilsimnel's avatar

115–118. I have been that weight before and that’s where I feel at my best. I’m of average build and 5’ 1”, and right now I’m at 138, which is great because earlier this year, I was 160. I can tell I’m not at my right weight as things don’t “feel” or look right about my body.

LC_Beta's avatar

I’m 5’2 and currently my heaviest ever at 135. For some reason I tend to idealize 120, but I haven’t been 120 since highschool. I would really love to get to 125, but lately I can’t seem to drop ANY weight, despite working hard at the gym.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

100lbs. I fluctuate between 95 lbs and 107lbs.

drdoombot's avatar

At 5’11, I weigh around 219lbs., though I look about 20 pounds lighter than that. According to BMI, I’m not just overweight, but obese. BMI does not take a person’s musculature into account. Many athletes and bodybuilders would be morbidly obese going by BMI.

Although some charts show that my ideal weight is in the 165lbs-175lbs. range, that is way too light for me. I was 175lbs. approximately 6 years ago (my lowest weight since high school), but I still looked flabby in all the wrong places. Since starting my gym regimen a couple of years ago, I realize that it’s okay to be heavier as long as it’s muscle.

One thing I’ve learned is that the most important measurement a person should take is his body fat percentage. Ideally, a man’s body fat percentage should be between 10% and 14%. For a woman, it is between 16% and 20%. According to body fat percentage, my ideal weight falls in between 187lbs. and 196lbs. (if I retain the same amount of muscle I have now). That range happens to be the range I’ve always been comfortable in and tend to naturally gravitate toward. I easily have 25lbs. to lose, but I’ve been steadily losing half-a-pound per week for past 2 months or so. As the saying goes, the slower you lose weight, the more likely it will stay lost.

I highly recommend that people get their body fat percentage tested and forget all the other measurements. On a side note, the most accurate measurements for body fat percentange are skinfold testing and Hydrostatic testing (AKA underwater weighing).

Frame calculator

Imagine that… I have a large frame. Go figure. Like you can’t tell by looking, but its nice to have confirmation.

I think the BMI should be outlawed or come with HUGE disclaimers and/or charts to measure frame size since anything other than pure “average” invalidates the charts.

Facade's avatar

@avvooooooo Me too. Thanks dad :|

DominicX's avatar

@avvooooooo

I have a small frame…woot…not a surprise by any means… :P

nxknxk's avatar

@DominicX

I’m also 5’5”-6” but I’m barely breaking 100lb. My ideal weight would be 120. When you were in the double-digits, did you do anything to gain weight? Or was it natural? I’m waiting for a miraculous metabolic slow-down but I’ll probably end up having to force myself to eat and exercise more or something.

DominicX's avatar

@nxknxk

My metabolism is still very quick and I wish I could say I did something, but all I did was get taller (I think I’ve reached my height limit at this point). I’m not that muscular either; I’ve just always been thin and back when I was in the double digits I was just shorter. You may want to try and “bulk up” more; I know plenty of people who have done that. I don’t know much about it, unfortunately.

avvooooooo's avatar

@Facade I have the calves of Ahrnold. Great. :P

So much for cute boots.

Facade's avatar

@avvooooooo Don’t even get me started lol

Axemusica's avatar

Lol, I’m probably the only one, but that BMI thinger says I’m at a healthy weight, lol. I’m 6’2” 185lbs and a Medium frame. I don’t agree with the BMI, but I’m pretty sure medium frame is right though. I think I could be in much better shape, but I’m not really over weight and feel I’m comfortable at my current weight. Now for curves and looking right, that’s another story, lol.

avvooooooo's avatar

The one thing I found on frame that makes it easy is to try and circle your wrist with your thumb and longest finger. If they overlap, its small. Touch or almost touch, medium. Nowhere near touching, large. :)

DrasticDreamer's avatar

I’m 5’8’’ and according to that frame calculator, I have a small frame. I currently weigh about 150, but I think I look best from 130 to 140. I remember when I got down to 120 because of a job I had, and people would never shut up about how skinny I was. It was really annoying, but I could not gain weight, no matter how I tried.

tedibear's avatar

I went to avvoooooo’s calculator and found out that I have a medium frame. I suspected this, what with being from hearty peasant stock, but the confirmation was nice. It also tells me that my goal weight of 120 lbs. (I’m 5’ 1”) is not unreasonable.

And yes, BMI sucks when it’s the only measurement used.

avvooooooo's avatar

@tedibear39 Yeah, we’re the ones that when the critter pulling the plow keeled over we could get up front and get ‘er done. :P

Jack79's avatar

I’d be perfect with anything between 78–83kg (180 lb) and happy with something around 88kg (or anything under 200 lb basically). But I’m currently over that (around 93kg/207 lb).

Coloma's avatar

I am a little under 5’4 and I look good at around 130ish, but…at my thinnest 110 I was amazingly fit but hungry about 100% of the time. I refuse to work my ass off ( literally ) and starve these days. Fuck the BMI charts! lol
